For five years, The Seasteading Institute has been conducting research into the potential for permanent, innovative communities – floating at sea. We are now able to apply this foundation of knowledge and our network towards an actual design, along with additional efforts to determine specific needs and desires of potential customers, and to select a practical location for what could become the world’s first city at sea.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security, however, has other ideas about what a resilient grid might look like. As part of its aptly named Resilient Electric Grid, or REG, project, DHS is giving $60 million to AMSC and Commonwealth Edison to install a high-temperature superconductor cable to increase the resilience of ComEd’s system in Chicago.

This research service provides a high-level analysis of the East African transmission and distribution (T&D) industry, focusing on the top 3 countries: Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. The base year for the study is 2013, and forecasts for the industry are provided from 2014 to 2019. The study provides insights into the current state of the T&D market in East Africa and identifies the key current and future projects. This study also discusses industry challenges, drivers, restraints, and offers a view on the investment climate within each of the 3 countries' T&D sectors.

Driven by rapid economic growth and electrification in China, India, and parts of the Middle East and Africa, the high-voltage transmission system (HVTS) market is expanding globally.  At the same time, the HVTS vendor landscape is changing as focus shifts to rebuilding and extending transmission infrastructure to utility-scale wind and solar projects in remote regions. 

Various industry publications from around the world point out that global demand for copper metal (produced from refined copper and recycled scrap) is projected to advanced 4.2 percent per year through 2019 to 36.0 million metric tons, valued at $261 Billion.
