Alabama hotel owner gunned down by man wanting a room - 0 views

    AN ALABAMA HOTELIER, Pravin Raojibhai Patel, was shot and killed last week after a confrontation with a man asking for a room, according to the Sheffield, Alabama, Police Department. William Jeremy Moore, 34, was arrested in connection with the incident, which comes three years after a series of similar killings of Indian American Hotel owners. Patel, 76, was the owner of the Hillcrest Motel in Sheffield. On Feb. 8, Moore came to the motel and tried to get a room when an altercation started between the two men. "That is when Mr. Moore pulled a handgun and shot Mr. Patel," Sheffield Police Chief Ricky Terry said in the report. "Mr. Moore was quickly apprehended by Sheffield Police on 13th Avenue when he was trying to break into an abandoned house. When searching Mr. Moore, the murder weapon was found in his possession." Jemeriz Owens, who works as a barber across the street from Patel's motel, told a local news station that he heard three gunshots go off back-to-back. He ran to the motel and found police attending to Patel, who was dead outside his office.

    U.S. HOTEL PERFORMANCE showed improvement in the second week of January compared to the previous week, with mixed year-over-year comparisons, according to CoStar. Key metrics, including occupancy, ADR, and RevPAR, saw moderate increases during the week compared to the New Year's commencement. The performance was influenced by the Consumer Electronics Show. Occupancy came in at 53.3 percent for the week ending Jan. 13, up from the previous week's 46.8 percent and reflecting a 2.8 percent year-over-year decrease. ADR rose to $153.84, compared to the prior week's $152.17, showing a 6.3 percent increase from the previous year. RevPAR increased to $81.96 from the prior week's $71.28, showing a 3.3 percent rise from the corresponding period in 2023. Among the top 25 markets, Las Vegas demonstrated the largest year-over-year increases in each of the three performance metrics. Occupancy increased by 29 percent to reach 79.8 percent, ADR rose by 77.3 percent to $283.74, and RevPAR increased by 128.8 percent to $226.34.

Around 35 percent of Americans anticipate an overnight business trip within the next four months, with 16 percent planning to boost their business-related travel this summer compared to last summer, the survey conducted by Morning Consult found. Meanwhile, hotels remain the preferred lodging option for both business travelers, with 60 percent, and leisure travelers, with 46 percent, this summer, the survey revealed. The survey presents a positive outlook for hoteliers amid ongoing economic challenges like a nationwide labor shortage and high interest rates, AHLA said. However, it indicates that persistent inflation remains a significant obstacle to growth for hoteliers and other travel-related businesses.

CoStar: Americas, Asia Pacific lead global pipeline surge in Q2 - 0 views

The U.S. leads the Americas with around 157,713 rooms under construction, while China tops the Asia Pacific with 319,012 rooms under construction. In the Americas, construction surged to around 208,718 rooms, an 8.3 percent rise from June 2023, CoStar's June 2024 data showed. Final planning had 299,153 rooms, up 6.9 percent from the previous year, while the planning phase saw 385,945 rooms, a significant 34.6 percent increase. The region had 893,816 rooms under contract, a notable 17.8 percent uptick. After the U.S., Mexico recorded about 13,301 rooms under construction, with Canada and Brazil following at 8,686 and 5,948 rooms, respectively, CoStar said.

LE: More than 6,000 hotel projects in U.S. pipeline at Q2 end - 0 views

This all-time high marks a 9 percent year-over-year increase in projects and an 8 percent increase in rooms compared to the second quarter of 2023. LE's Q2 2024 U.S. Hotel Construction Pipeline Trend Report revealed 1,171 projects with 147,611 rooms under construction at the end of the second quarter, reflecting a 10 percent increase in projects and a 4 percent increase in rooms year-over-year. LE expects that as interest rates decline, projects scheduled to start in the next 12 months will quickly move to under construction. Extended-stay brands remain popular with developers, comprising 36 percent of projects under construction, 33 percent of those starting in the next 12 months and 34 percent of projects in early planning, the report said. Sixty-four percent of these projects are in the middle tier of brands.

The construction volume increased year-over-year for four consecutive months, with upscale and upper midscale segments dominating pipeline activity. "The number of rooms in construction has grown year-over-year for four consecutive months," said Isaac Collazo, STR's vice president, analytics. "While upscale and upper midscale continue to dominate, accounting for about 50 percent of all rooms in the final phase of the pipeline, the pace of activity in these segments has slowed compared to last year. Midscale and economy have shown the most growth, up 42 percent and 34 percent, respectively, with newer brands and extended-stay accounting for most of the new construction across the midscale segment." Approximately 157,713 rooms were under construction in June, up 5.5 percent from the same month last year. Additionally, 266,619 rooms were in the final planning phase, a 9.8 percent increase from June 2023. The planning stage saw 333,827 rooms, a rise of 38.7 percent compared to the previous year.
