IT'S BEEN A tough year for women in the hospitality industry, but progress has been made as more female executives took leadership roles, according to an annual report from the Castell Project, a nonprofit focused on promoting women in the industry. The next challenge, according to the project, is getting more women in hospitality education programs. Castell Project founder and chairwoman Peggy Berg released the 2022 Women in Hospitality Industry Leadership report during the Americas Lodging Investment Summit in Los Angeles earlier this week. During the conference, Berg received the ISHC Pioneer Award for her work in the industry, and she told a story during her acceptance speech that encapsulates where women are coming from in the industry. When she was in college, Berg said, the Equal Employment Opportunity Act lifted the restrictions on women working. So, she walked into a large firm looking for a job. "The partner in charge of the office, Jerry, he took one look at me and said 'Well, this will never work.' And then because of the EEOA, he said, 'I will give you a job if you promise not to get pregnant for two years,'" Berg said. "Jerry thought this was impossible. I thought Jerry didn't understand the law. Mostly I thought, if that's the barrier to success, the best vertical I have to cross, I can run this company. And a few years later, 140 men found themselves with a female partner."

THE BAIRD/STR HOTEL Stock Index dropped in May, after rising continuously for five months. Investors grew concerned about macroeconomic slowing and inflationary pressures which led to the broader stock market volatility. Baird/STR dropped 5.8 percent during the month, according to STR. Baird/STR went up 0.7 percent during April. The index decreased 2.8 percent over the first five months of 2022. It increased 2.2 percent in March after rising 4.1 percent in February. Baird/STR index fell behind the S&P 500, which was flat from April, but surpassed the MSCI US REIT Index, which was down 6.3 percent. The hotel brand sub-index fell 6 percent from April, while the Hotel REIT sub-index dipped 4.9 percent during the month.

THE REVPAR OF U.S. hotels reached an all-time weekly high on a nominal basis in the second week of June as performance jumped, according to STR. The ADR and occupancy levels were the second and third highest of the pandemic-era, respectively, during the week. Occupancy was 70.6 percent for the week ending June 11, up from 63.2 percent the week before and dropped 4.1 percent from 2019. ADR was $155.37 for the week, up from $147.35 the week before and increased 15.4 percent from three years ago. RevPAR reached $109.76 during the week, up from $93.16 the week before and up 10.7 percent from 2019. According to STR, the top 25 markets posted their highest metrics since the beginning of the pandemic in aggregate during June's second week. Leading the major markets in absolute occupancy for the week were Seattle with 85.2 percent, San Francisco/San Mateo with 84.3 percent and New York with 85.1 percent.

Geeta and I also had the privilege of traveling together socially with JP and Ilaben across the world. It was during those trips that JP's true kindness and gentle heart was in full force and effect. He always took the time to engage with everyone we came across during our trips and would always leave everyone with a smile on their face. We spent many evenings together discussing what was most important to JP - his faith, his family and his friends.

U.S. HOTEL PERFORMANCE was up in the first week of December compared to the week before, according to STR. However, occupancy was down during the week when compared to 2019. Occupancy was 55.4 percent for the week ending Dec. 3, up from 50.4 percent the week before and decreased 7.7 percent from 2019. ADR was $141.71 during the week, up from $135.49 the week before and up 10.2 percent from three years ago. RevPAR reached $78.50 during the week, increased from $68.27 the week before and up 1.7 percent from 2019. Among STR's top 25 markets, New Orleans reported the only occupancy increase, up 1.1 percent to 67.2 percent, over 2019.

U.S. HOTELS PERFORMANCE was down in the fourth week of December compared to the week before, according to STR. The market also saw lower performance in November compared to October, and performance during the month was also decreased when compared to 2019. ADR was $132.29 during the week, dropped from $135.08 the week before and up 2.3 percent from three years ago. RevPAR reached $58.04 during the week, decreased from $73.65 the week before and dropped 7.6 percent from 2019. Among STR's top 25 markets for the week, Houston reported the highest occupancy increase, up 3.4 percent to 43.1 percent, over 2019. Seattle posted the highest ADR lift, up 19.7 percent to $130.07, over 2019. Miami saw the steepest ADR, down 26.2 percent to $225.08 and RevPAR, dropped 42.4 percent to $138.19, declines from 2019.

"The Night of a Thousand Stars Gala brings our entire industry together to celebrate the work and dedication of the unsung heroes of hospitality-the individuals at the heart of our industry," said Anna Blue, AHLA Foundation president.
