HYATT INDIA RECENTLY launched the Vocational Education and Training Swiss Professional Diploma program across its properties, including Hyatt Regency Delhi, Andaz Delhi, Grand Hyatt Gurgaon and Hyatt Regency Lucknow. The company worked with the Confederation of Indian Industry and EHL Hospitality Business School to offer an 18-month program for students who have completed their higher secondary education with at least 50 percent marks in English. The program, divided into foundational, intermediate and advanced levels, will equip students with the skills and knowledge required to succeed in the hospitality industry, according to a joint press statement. THE AMERICAS AND Asia Pacific saw a year-over-year increase in hotel pipeline activity at the end of second quarter, according to CoStar. The U.S. leads the Americas with around 157,713 rooms under construction, while China tops the Asia Pacific with 319,012 rooms under construction. In the Americas, construction surged to around 208,718 rooms, an 8.3 percent rise from June 2023, CoStar's June 2024 data showed. Final planning had 299,153 rooms, up 6.9 percent from the previous year, while the planning phase saw 385,945 rooms, a significant 34.6 percent increase. The region had 893,816 rooms under contract, a notable 17.8 percent uptick. After the U.S., Mexico recorded about 13,301 rooms under construction, with Canada and Brazil following at 8,686 and 5,948 rooms, respectively, CoStar said.

THE NEW YORK City Council postponed a hearing, originally scheduled for July 30, on the "Safe Hotels Act" bill in response to protests from industry associations and hotel owners. The American Hotel & Lodging Association and AAHOA argued that the bill would disrupt their members' businesses and significantly harm the city's nearly 700 hotels and approximately 265,000 employees. The associations welcomed the delay, allowing more time for feedback before the legislative process continues. "Over the last 10 days, NYC's hotel industry and the tourism economy have rallied to speak with one voice and resoundingly make clear that the Hotel Licensing bill introduced in the City Council has the potential to devastate New York City's hotel industry," said Kevin Carey, AHLA's interim president and CEO. "We are grateful for the support of our members, hotel industry coalition partners, and our allies in the restaurant and real estate community for helping to avert an economic disaster in New York City that no one wants."

U.S. EXTENDED-STAY room supply grew by 3.5 percent in June, exceeding the average monthly increase of the past two years, according to The Highland Group. June marked the 33rd consecutive month of supply growth at 4 percent or less, with annual changes remaining below 2 percent for the past two years. However, both metrics are well below the long-term average. The growth includes the addition of Water Walk by Wyndham, a mid-priced extended-stay brand, to the database in May following its affiliation with Wyndham, the report said. The 12.8 percent increase in economy extended-stay supply, along with modest gains in midprice and upscale segments, is mainly due to conversions, The Highland Group said. New construction in the economy segment is estimated at about 3 percent of rooms open compared to a year ago. The report noted that supply change comparisons have been affected by re-branding, shifting rooms between segments, de-flagging hotels that no longer meet brand standards, and the sale of hotels to apartment companies and municipalities. The trend is likely to taper off in the second half of 2024, with the full-year increase in extended-stay supply compared to 2023 remaining well below the long-term average.

MARRIOTT INTERNATIONAL LAUNCHED HotelHelp, a pilot room donation program for human trafficking survivors, at the AHLA Foundation's third annual No Room for Trafficking Summit. The program works with care providers who handle bookings, offering survivors short-term stays at Marriott properties, Marriott said in a statement. The program is being piloted in five U.S. cities-Atlanta, Detroit, Phoenix, Seattle, and Washington, D.C.-and is expected to expand to 25 cities across North America by January 2025. "Survivors of human trafficking often face a shortage of dedicated shelter beds that put them at greater risk of being re-trafficked after exiting their trafficking situation," said Anthony Capuano, Marriott's president and CEO. THE AHLA FOUNDATION granted $1 million to the 2024-2025 No Room for Trafficking Survivor Fund grantees, eight community-based organizations aiding human trafficking survivors. The grantees were announced at the third annual NRFT Summit on July 30, coinciding with United Nations World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, a global campaign to end child trafficking. "The No Room for Trafficking Survivor Fund is a first for our industry, and already, it's a powerful example of collective impact and what we can achieve when the industry comes together," said Anna Blue, AHLA Foundation's president. "This year, we were able to double the total awarded funds from $500,000 in 2023 to $1 million in 2024 and invite more than 40 community-based organizations to apply."

APPROXIMATELY 6,095 PROJECTS with 713,151 rooms are in the U.S. construction pipeline at the end of the second quarter, according to Lodging Econometrics. LE expects that as interest rates decline, projects scheduled to start in the next 12 months will quickly move to under construction. Extended-stay brands remain popular with developers, comprising 36 percent of projects under construction, 33 percent of those starting in the next 12 months and 34 percent of projects in early planning, the report said. Sixty-four percent of these projects are in the middle tier of brands.
