TAMPA-ST. PETERSBURG, FLORIDA led in meetings and events growth for the top 25 markets in February with a 20 percent year-over-year increase, according to Knowland. Denver and Boston came in second and third, respectively, while National Associations and Technology groups led in four of the top five markets. Overall, year-over-year event volume growth for the industry reached 5.3 percent, the report said. Meetings in the top 25 markets used an average space of 3,507 square feet, compared to 2,890 square feet in secondary markets. The top 25 markets had an average of 124 attendees, while secondary markets averaged 118 attendees. Additional insights into the key industry drivers for the top 25 markets with the highest meeting volumes include: Tampa-St. Petersburg (up 20 percent): national association, healthcare, charity/non-profit/social services, technology and wedding. NEARLY 500,000 HOTEL operations jobs lost during the pandemic will not returning to the industry before the end of the year, according to a report from the American Hotel & Lodging Association. In response, AHLA has launched the "Hotels are Hiring" ad campaign with the goal of filling more than 100,000 jobs in the industry. A surge in leisure travel has led to improved conditions for most U.S. hotels, but AHLA's economic analysis found the recovery is far from bringing the industry back to pre-pandemic levels. Urban markets in particular are lagging. Hotel occupancy is projected to drop 10 percentage points from 2019 levels, the report said, and room revenue is expected to drop $44 billion this year compared to 2019. State and local governments have lost more than $20 billion in unrealized tax revenues from hotels over the past two years. AHLA and AAHOA held the Virtual Action Summit on July 20 to 22 in which hoteliers from across the country met with members of Congress to ask for help.

THE BUSINESS TRAVEL revenue of U.S. hotels is expected to drop $20 billion this year, down 23 percent when compared to 2019, according to the American Hotel & Lodging Association and Kalibri Labs. It is already reported that hotels lost an estimated $108 billion in business travel revenue during 2020 and 2021 combined. The report said that business travel revenue, the largest source of revenue in hotel industry, will take significantly longer to recover. However, leisure travel is expected to return to pre-pandemic levels this year, the report added. "While dwindling COVID-19 case counts and relaxed CDC guidelines are providing a sense of optimism for reigniting travel, this report underscores how tough it will be for many hotels and hotel employees to recover from years of lost revenue," said Chip Rogers, president and CEO of AHLA. "The good news is that after two years of virtual work arrangements, Americans recognize the unmatched value of face-to-face meetings and say they are ready to start getting back on the road for business travel."

AS MANY AS 60 percent of Americans are likely to stay in hotels this year, more than last year, according to two surveys commissioned by the American Hotel & Lodging Association. The survey findings apply to business and leisure travelers, with most saying they are travelling as much as or more than they did pre-pandemic. Hotels are the top lodging choice among travelers for business and leisure in the next three months, the new national Hotel Booking Index survey research commissioned by AHLA and conducted by Morning Consult has revealed. According to the surveys, conducted on Dec. 16 to 19 and Dec. 28 to Jan. 2, 52 percent of adults would choose to stay in hotels in the next three months, while 76 percent of potential business travelers would be most likely to stay in a hotel during the same period. Besides, business travelers indicate that nearly 70 percent of their employers have either returned to the pre-pandemic normal or increased amounts of business travel. The survey said that 51 percent of business travelers said that share of employees expected or encouraged to travel for work is now the same as before the pandemic, while another 20 percent said it's more than before. About 53 percent of business travelers said that the average length of business trips is now the same as before the pandemic, while another 20 percent said it's more than before.

HOTEL INVESTMENT AND management company Banyan Investment Group announced the initial closing of $20 million Banyan Lodging Enhanced Value Fund, also known as BLEV or "Believe." The fund gives investors an opportunity to purchase hotels that have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, a statement said. The group said that the first Closing delivered more than half of capital sought to acquire pandemic-impacted hotels. According to prospective investors, BLEV will reach its $35 million hard cap early next year, well before the formal end of its offering period. "The hospitality industry continues to reel from the COVID pandemic and its uneven recovery, and many markets continue to suffer from a sustained, record decline in hotel performance, a lack of liquidity in the capital markets and value dislocation," said Andy Chopra, managing partner and CIO at Banyan Investment Group. "We believe the impact caused by the pandemic has created a number of investment opportunities, ranging from newer assets selling at below replacement costs to discounts resulting from owners facing liquidity crises. BLEV will take advantage of these prevailing headwinds as we move further into a post-pandemic world." The fund will be used to form joint venture partnerships with institutional investors and/or syndicates of retail investors, with a total investible equity in the range of $350,000,000. The BLEV will focus on high-barrier-to-entry hotel locations, targeting properties with significant discounts and expects to deliver superior, risk-adjusted returns for investors when the hospitality industry re-stabilizes.

IN THE WAKE of spring break travel, U.S hotel performance continues to register growth in the third week of March compared to the previous week, according to STR's latest data through 18 March. Occupancy stood at 67.6 percent for the week ending March 18, up from 64.7 percent the week before, 1.3 percent more than the comparable week in 2002 and 2.5 percent down the comparable week in 2019. ADR was $167.04, increased from $158.20 the week before and up 8.9 percent and 23.9 percent over the same month in 2022 and 2019, respectively. RevPAR arrived at $112.89 in the third week, up from $102.38 the previous week, and an increase of 10.4 percent and 20.8 percent against the same month in 2022 and 2019. Among the Top 25 Markets, Boston saw the highest year-over-year increase in occupancy, up 17.8 percent to 71.8 percent, while Houston witnessed the highest occupancy increase over 2019, increased 9.6 percent to 72.5 percent. Las Vegas reported the highest ADR, up 77.9 percent to $306.79 and RevPAR increased 101.5 percent to $277.09 year-over-year. Las Vegas market also posted the highest increases in the measuring of ADR (up 113.2 percent to $306.79) and RevPAR (increased 116.9 percent to $277.09 percent), against 2019.
