STR: Halloween impacts U.S. hotels in the fourth week of October - 0 views

    U.S. HOTEL PERFORMANCE dropped in the fourth week of October compared to the week before, according to STR. When compared to 2019, occupancy increased as a result of the Halloween calendar shift, as the holiday fell during the comparable week three years ago. STR reminded that in the first week of November performance metrics will show the negative side of that shift. Occupancy was 65.8 percent for the week ending Oct. 29, down from 69.9 percent the week before and up 5.2 percent from 2019. ADR was $152.94 during the week, dipped from $157.43 the week before and up 21.4 percent from three years ago. RevPAR reached $100.59 during the week, down from $110.11 the week before and up 27.8 percent from 2019. Among STR's top 25 markets, Tampa reported the largest increase in each of the key performance metrics: occupancy up 21.5 percent to 76.1 percent, ADR increased 42.1 percent to $158.38 and RevPAR improved 72.5 percent to $120.58, over 2019. Tampa has been one of the markets in Florida that have seen a performance lift associated with post-Hurricane Ian demand.

The RevPAR on a nominal basis scaled new weekly record during the week, occupancy was the highest since August 2019, while ADR on a nominal basis was the highest since the week ending 1 January 2022. Occupancy was 72.3 percent for the week ending June 25, up from 71.8 percent the week before and dropped 4.1 percent from 2019. ADR was $157.05 for the week, up from $155.02 the week before and increased 17.1 percent from three years ago. RevPAR reached $113.55 during the week up from $111.29 the week before and up 12.3 percent from 2019. Dallas saw the largest occupancy increase, up 5.8 percent to 74.1 percent, over 2019, among STR's top 25 markets.

STR: U.S. hotels report highs in the third week of June - 0 views

    THE REVPAR OF U.S. hotels reached an all-time weekly high on a nominal and a pandemic-era high on an inflation-adjusted basis in the third week of June, according to STR. Boosted by the highest weekly demand of 28 million room nights sold since August 2019, occupancy was the highest of the pandemic-era during the week. Occupancy was 71.8 percent for the week ending June 18, up from 70.6 percent the week before and dropped 4.8 percent from 2019. ADR was $155.02 for the week, slightly down from $155.37 the week before and increased 14.9 percent from three years ago. RevPAR reached $111.29 during the week up from $109.76 the week before and up 9.4 percent from 2019. San Diego saw the only occupancy increase, up 0.5 percent to 86 percent, over 2019 among STR's top 25 markets. According to STR, New York City (86.6 percent), San Diego and Seattle (85 percent) led the major markets in absolute occupancy for the week.

    U.S. HOTEL PERFORMANCE bounced back in the third week of July after two consecutive weeks of lower demand due to the Independence Day holiday, according to STR. Occupancy was 72 percent for the week ending July 16, up from 63.3 percent the week before and dropped 7.4 percent from 2019. ADR was $157.23 for the week, up from $153.71 the week before and increased 14.9 percent from three years ago. RevPAR reached $113.28 during the week, up from $97.37 the week before and increased 6.4 percent from 2019. San Diego reported the only occupancy increase among STR's top 25 markets during the week, up 1 percent to 89.9 percent, over 2019. According to STR, San Diego (89.9 percent), Oahu Island (87.2 percent) and Seattle (85.8 percent) led the major markets in absolute occupancy. Miami posted the largest ADR gain, up 29.9 percent to $204.15, over three years ago. Only San Francisco reported an ADR decrease, down 4.1 percent to $229.24, compared to 2019.

The weekly performance was also down when compared to 2019. Occupancy was 61.7 percent for the week ending Sept. 10, down from 62.8 percent the week before and decreased 11.2 percent from 2019. ADR was $146.80 for the week, down from $147.14 the week before and increased 10.6 percent from three years ago. RevPAR reached $90.50 during the week, dipped from $92.45 the week before and decreased 1.8 percent from 2019. Orlando reported the only occupancy increase, up 1.5 percent to 59.3 percent, among STR's top 25 markets, when compared to 2019.

Also, all metrics in April as a month improved compared to March, and hotels reported all-time high room rates during the period. Occupancy was 68.6 percent for the week ending May 21, up from 66.5 percent the week before and down 3.5 percent from 2019. ADR was $151.75 for the week, increased from $148.31 the week before and up 13.4 percent from three years ago. RevPAR reached $104.06 percent during the week, up from $98.59 the week before and rose 9.5 percent from 2019. STR's top 25 markets saw their highest weekly occupancy, ADR and RevPAR levels of the pandemic-era during the week.

ADR was $147.35 for the week, down from $151.73 the week before and up 11.3 percent from three years ago. RevPAR reached $93.16 during the week, decreased from $100.97 the week before and dropped 2.2 percent from 2019. None of STR's top 25 markets showed an occupancy increase over 2019 during the post Memorial Day week. Orlando came closest to its pre-pandemic levels, down just 2.5 percent to 68.9 percent, and Miami posted the largest ADR gain, up 37.8 percent to $209.55.

RevPAR reached $80.45 in the first week, slightly up from $80.32 the week before and up 5.6 percent from January 2019. None of STR's top 25 markets saw an occupancy increase during the week. Las Vegas came closest to its 2019 occupancy at 78.2 percent, down 1.4 percent. It also reported the highest ADR, up 79.5 percent to $221.38 and RevPAR, up 76.9 percent to $173.20, over 2019 mainly due to Design & Construction Week 2023 and the NFL Pro Bowl Games.

Occupancy was 54.5 percent for the week ending Dec. 17, down from 59.6 percent the week before and an increase of 9.2 percent from 2019. ADR was $135.08 during the week, dropped from $144.79 the week before and up 23.7 percent from three years ago. RevPAR reached $73.65 during the week, down from $86.29 the week before and up 35.1 percent from 2019.

    U.S. HOTEL OCCUPANCY has reached an all-time high in the fourth week of December though the numbers came in lower than the previous week, according to STR. Christmas Day occupancy was 47.2 percent, up from the previous high of 47 percent recorded in 2015. Occupancy was 44.3 percent for the week ended Dec. 25, down from 53.8 percent the week before, and down 8.7 percent when compared to 2019. ADR was $129.67 for the week, up from $121.87 the week before and an increase of 0.5 percent from 2019. RevPAR reached $57.46, down from $65.61 the week before, and dropped 8.3 percent from two years ago. According to STR, a steeper decline during the week from 2019 levels was due to the fact that Christmas fell on a Wednesday two years ago and allowed for an earlier return to non-holiday weekend levels that year. "While Omicron-related closures and service disruptions affected performance in New York City, overall U.S. occupancy was less impacted," STR said.

ADR was $155.63 for the month, up from $154.32 in September and up 16.8 percent from three years ago. RevPAR was $104.59 for the month, improved from $103 the month before and up 14 percent over 2019. STR's top 25 markets showed higher occupancy and ADR than all other markets in October mainly due to continued improvement in business travel and groups.

STR: GOPPAR improved in September; labor costs exceed 2019 - 0 views

    GOPPAR FOR U.S. hotels improved in September compared to the month before and it exceeded the pre-pandemic levels, according to STR. Meanwhile, the cost of labor per available room came in higher than the pre-pandemic comparable for the first time. GOPPAR was $84.03 for the month, up from $64.26 reported in August. It was $78.30 for July and $91.23 in June. The performance index was $88.63 in May and stood at $90.96 in April. EBITDA PAR was $60.71 for September, TRevPAR was $222.97 and labor costs per room were $71.52. "Labor costs moved ahead the 2019 comparable due to continued high levels of hospitality unemployment and more spending on contract labor," said Raquel Ortiz, STR's director of financial performance. "Total labor costs were up 5 percent year to date, with all departments reporting higher expenses, except F&B, due to less group demand earlier this year. GOPPAR was the strongest since June 2022, and profit margins came in higher than September 2019. Profit margins have been strong for some time caused by lower employment levels and reduced services."

According to STR, there was demand shifts in the southeast region due to Hurricane Ian besides the Rosh Hashanah impact on business travel and groups.
