Long Time Lost is a free "service" that allows you to create a "search" for someone you lost touch with. That "search" is then indexed by Google (and other search engines) and then when that person you are looking for (or someone who knows them) does a "Vanity Search" they find your "search" and can respond to you and reconnect. A "Vanity Search" is the process of searching for one's own name on Google... we know you do it! All information is handled through the system so your private information like your email address isn't out there on the net. It's Web 2.0, it's powered by Google, it's Ruby on Rails and best of all; it's free.

Umibozu - 0 views

How it works In today's modern Internet, search engines have full control over the web, they can make sites be the center of attention or make them disappear altogether in a flash. A web site that is not referenced by Google, Yahoo or MSN is virtually nonexistent to the average user; it is also largely accepted that search engines cover only 20% of the World Wide Web today. In other words, search engine algorithms dictate which web sites are 'visible' and which web sites don't exist. There is nothing democratic about it, the search engines decide. Either you fit in the system, or you're out of the game. No matter how good your web site is, no matter how good users think your web site is, machines decide if it is a good match for you or not. It could be full of junk for all you know, as long as it follows the rules of page ranking and other criterias set by the algorithms. Like it or not, there is a dictatorship of information, no matter how good the intentions of these companies are, they have control over what you see. Who can better judge if a web site is a good match for your key words, if it's not you ? Aren't you the one who should judge if a web site is right for you? User driven Umibozu attempts to address this problem by providing users the means to vote for web sites that they find interesting or useful, bringing more democracy to the web 2.0. In order to start off the process though, Umibozu brings together all the results of the major search engines in one place, then lets the user refine the results. After all, machines also have the right to vote. Meta search engine Say you're looking for the best pizza place in town, you should not take for granted whatever your good friend tells you, it's always best to have several recommendations, no matter how much you trust this friend. Also, your taste and preferences are an important factor in your choice for a good pizza, and should be taken into account when looking for a good place to eat. This is why Um

Snake Oil? The scientific evidence for health supplements | Information Is Beautiful - 2 views

  •
This visualisation generates itself from this Google Doc. So when new research comes out, we can quickly update the data and regenerate the image. (How cool is that??) Hopefully then this should be a useful web resources for years to come. About the imageThis image is a "balloon race". The higher a bubble, the greater the evidence for its effectiveness. But the supplements are only effective for the conditions listed inside the bubble. You might also see multiple bubbles for certain supps. These is because some supps affect a range of conditions, but the evidence quality varies from condition to condition. For example, there's strong evidence that Green Tea is good for cholesterol levels. But evidence for its anti-cancer effects is conflicting. In these cases, we give a supp another bubble.

ProgrammableWeb: Web 2.0 Mashup Matrix - 0 views

  •
An experimental matrix of Web 2.0 mashups.
Usage: Hover the cursor over any cell in the matrix. A small box gives details on mashups for that API combination. Top links in hover box bring you to that API's reference page. Links in body of hover box take you directly to the mashup. Not all combinations have mashups & only those with the 'º' indicator currently have entries. Cells at the intersection of same API (ex: Amazon+Amazon) list any other examples for that API.

Note that there are two views into the matrix: the default view shows only those APIs for which mashups have been added to the database. The second view shows all APIs regardless of whether there's currently a mashup registered. It's big. Definitions: What is a mashup anyway? As always, it's good to check Wikipedia's definition, but essentially a "mashup" is a web-based application built through (creative) combination of data from multiple sources. Often, but by no means always, this data is retrieved by using a vendor's API such as those listed here. (An API? Also at Wikipedia.) Some recent press may also help explain: BusinessWeek's "Mix, Match and Mutate", The Economist's "Mashing the Web". Background: This is an experiment. It is intended to be both a reference point and also a visualization. What you see here today will change both in content and form shortly. I am quite interested in seeing the 'space' in which mashups exist. Clearly, some APIs such as Google Maps, appear to be more widely used than others. UI Issues: Cross-browser support is good but not complete. Sometimes it can b
