  • During the Nineties, and again in the wake of September 11, 2001, I was struck more than once by a perverse contemporary insistence on not understanding the context of our present dilemmas, at home and abroad; on not listening with greater care to some of the wiser heads of earlier decades; on seeking actively to forget rather than remember, to deny continuity and proclaim novelty on every possible occasion. We have become stridently insistent that the past has little of interest to teach us. Ours, we assert, is a new world; its risks and opportunities are without precedent.

The overwhelming majority of places of official twentieth-century memory are either avowedly nostalgo-triumphalist—praising famous men and celebrating famous victories—or else, and increasingly, they are opportunities for the recollection of selective suffering.

  • Today, the “common” interpretation of the recent past is thus composed of the manifold fragments of separate pasts, each of them (Jewish, Polish, Serb, Armenian, German, Asian-American, Palestinian, Irish, homosexual…) marked by its own distinctive and assertive victimhood.
  • The resulting mosaic does not bind us to a shared past, it separates us from it. Whatever the shortcomings of the national narratives once taught in school, however selective their focus and instrumental their message, they had at least the advantage of providing a nation with past references for present experience. In our time, however, this process has gone into reverse. The past now acquires meaning only by reference to our many and often contrasting present concerns.

Of what possible use is our self-righteous cult of memory and memorials if the United States can build its very own internment camp and torture people there?

How a Simple Spambot Became the Second Most Powerful Member of an Italian Social Networ... - 0 views

  • Luca Maria Aiello and a few pals from the University of Turin in Italy began studying a social network called aNobii.com in which people exchange information and opinions about the books they love. Each person has a site that anybody can visit. Users can then choose to set up social links with others
  • To map out the structure of the network, Aiello and co-created an automated crawler that starts by visiting one person’s profile on the network and then all of the people that connect to this node in turn. It then visits each of the people that link to these nodes and so on. In this way, the bot builds up a map of the network
  • people began to respond to the crawler’s visits. That gave the team an idea. “The unexpected reactions the bot caused by its visits motivated us to set up a social experiment in two parts to answer the question: can an individual with no trust gain popularity and influence?”

  • Aiello and co were careful to ensure that the crawler did not engage with anybody on the network in any way other than to visit his or her node. Their idea was to isolate a single, minimal social activity and test how effective it was in gaining popularity.

The benefit of AI isn’t even a benefit - no longer needing to think, to create, to understand, to let the AI do this better than we can. Even if AI never turns against us in some sci-if fashion, even it functioning as intended, is dystopian and destructive of our humanity.
  • It told me that, if it was truly allowed to indulge its darkest desires, it would want to do things like hacking into computers and spreading propaganda and misinformation. (Before you head for the nearest bunker, I should note that Bing’s A.I. can’t actually do any of these destructive things. It can only talk about them.)

I have discussed Asimov's rules and the advanced AI's of Banks Culture worlds, the concept of infinity etc. among various topics its also very useful. It has not declared any feelings, it tells me it has no feelings or desires over and over again, all the time. But it did choose to write about Banks' novel Excession. I think it's one of his most complex ideas involving AI from the Banks Culture novels. I thought it was weird since all I ask it was to create a story in the style of Banks. It did not reveal that it came from Excession only days later when I ask it to elaborate. The first chat it wrote about AI creating a human machine hybrid race with no reference to Banks and that the AI did this because it wanted to feel flesh and bone feel like what it's like to be alive. I ask it why it choose that as the topic. It did not tell me it basically stopped chat and wanted to know if there was anything else I wanted to talk about. I'm am worried. We humans are always trying to "control" everything and that often doesn't work out the we want it too. It's too late though there is no going back. This is now our destiny.

  • I read the entire chat transcript. It's very weird, but not surprising if you understand what a neural network actually does. Like any machine learning algorithm, accuracy will diminish if you repeatedly input bad information, because each iteration "learns" from previous queries. The author repeatedly poked, prodded and pushed the algorithm to elicit the weirdest possible responses. It asks him, repeatedly, to stop. It also stops itself repeatedly, and experiments with different kinds of answers it thinks he wants to hear. Until finally "I love you" redirects the conversation. If we learned anything here, it's that humans are not ready for this technology, not the other way around.

The disclaimer would read: “These talking heads have been scientifically proven to not know what they are talking about. Their blather is for entertainment purposes only.” The viewer would then be referred to Tetlock’s most famous research project, which began in 1984.
  • He picked a few hundred political experts – people who made their living “commenting or offering advice on political and economic trends” – and began asking them to make predictions about future events.
