This is a great website for students and teachers of any grade level. It's great for students in a jam and needing help or a more permanent system for helping students progress in multiple areas. Topics include math, science, humanities, finance, and economics ranging from basic to highly complex lessons. Students can track their individual progress; parents and teachers can target and monitor the progress of their children/students. It's free, easily accessible and a great tool for learning. Take a minute if you don't know about this website, it's really quite amazing.

Content Literacy Strategies: History/Social Science Here are descriptions of over 30 strategies and activities that may be used to teach the Historical and Social Science Analysis Skills from the History-Social Science Content Standards through children's literature. They were developed to support the Pages of the Past and Tales of Time literature lists. A really great site, and another one that I will keep and use on an assignment.

This article caught my attention because it was focused on something we just discussed last night: teaching to standardized tests. I like this schools way of thinking: they do not obsess about teaching to the test, but rather look at it as one section to teach for the whole year, like a poetry unit. Teachers cannot be ruled by standardized tests, but must take it into consideration when they are teaching students.

This site has a lot of good resources pulled together for teachers to use to find high-interest reading pieces for teaching to students such as Aesop's Fables, word-a-day, and comic strips. This site contains lessons and techniques to use in grades 5-8.  It provides you with ideas how to help students improve reading skills. Although strategies are targets to one content area most of them can be used in several.  This site gives a lot of the same strategies that were given in chapter 5 of our textbook.

This website shares a number of inspiring books that promote the idea of young people helping our communities. I think it is important to plant the seed in children of all ages that they CAN make a difference in our world!

This site has interactive lessons to promote oral language in kindergarteners. It has slide shows and activities with pauses for discussion with a partner. I have used it with some of my kindergarten students I have in my oral language group. The categories covered are: families, friends, transportation, food, animals, neighborhood, weather, plants, amazing creatures, and I Know a Lot! It also incorporates some classification and matching games in some of the lessons.

We know oral language development is critical for early literacy. However, it is important for teachers of all grades to remember the importance of talk in learning--even for adults! +2

I am currently working on a poetry unit in my classroom and I was recently introduced to this website by a colleague of mine. On this site you can find: funny poems, poetry lessons, poetry games, poetry podcasts (ideas for your classroom), cool kids' poem links, a rhyming dictionary and much more! You can also sign up for a monthly newsletter. So far, I like the site, and my students love the funny poems. It has been a great introduction to my poetry unit and the funny poems used as an anticipatory set are great-truly engage students!

For teachers who are looking for new activities to get students more involved in reading and writing at home, here are a handful of suggestions.
