Chartres Cathedral - Chartres, France - 0 views

Chartres Cathedral was rebuilt after a fire in 1194 by an unknown architect. The architect rebuilt the Cathedral into a cross that could be seen from Heaven making it the cutting edge of its day that Bishop Renoux wanted. The architect uses geometry of the square, circle and equilateral triangular which was common during the mid-evil times to design this magnificent cathedral.

The Abbey of Saint-Denis is situated in a small town to which it has given its name, about four miles north of Paris. St-Denis (Dionysius), the first bishop of Paris and his companions martyred in 270, were buried here and the small chapel built over the spot became a famous place of pilgrimage during the fifth and sixth centuries.
