Scores of professors and researchers from 16 universities throughout the Chicago metropolitan area have signed an open letter to the city's mayor, Rahm Emanuel, and Chicago school officials warning against implementing a teacher evaluation system that is based on standardized test scores. This is the latest protest against "value-added" teacher evaluation models that purport to measure how much "value" a teacher adds to a student's academic progress by using a complicated formula involving a standardized test score. Researchers have repeatedly warned against using these methods, but school reformers have been doing it in state after state anyway.

This e-learning module uses the example of the Darfur refugee crisis to demonstrate how the Minimum Standards for Education: Preparedness, Response, Recovery-the foundational tool of the Inter-Agency Network for Education in Emergencies (INEE)-can be used as a framework for designing quality education programmes in conflict-induced situations.  Throughout this module, you will watch short video clips, look at photographs, and read relevant articles and reports.  A series of questions will help you understand how the INEE Minimum Standards can be used to improve the quality of education assistance.

Pocket Guide to Inclusive Education With the input of many INEE members, INEE's Task Team on Inclusive Education and Disability developed this tool as a quick reference guide to help practitioners make sure that education in emergencies is accessible and inclusive for everyone, particularly those who have been traditionally excluded from education. This guide is aimed at anyone working to provide, manage or support education services in emergencies and complements the INEE Minimum Standards. It outlines useful principles for an inclusive education approach in emergencies and provides advice for planning, implementing and monitoring. The guide also looks at the issue of resistance to inclusion, and highlights ways in which organisations can support their emergency staff to develop more inclusive education responses. Teacher Leader Model Standards

Considering the vulnerability of children and the role schools can play in case of any natural or human induced disaster, the speakers of a seminar have stressed for creating disaster-resilient school communities that are better trained and equipped for dealing with any such emergency situation.   They demanded the government to declare May 16 as National School Safety Day and define standard operating procedures (SOPs) for schools which could be followed in case of any disaster. They said that these SOPs should be mounted on school walls and children and teachers be trained to strictly follow them.

As only a few days remain before education restarts in the quake-hit city of Van, school teachers in the city complain of poor living conditions. Due to their quake-damaged houses, many teachers live in other housing such as large shipping containers or preschools and have complained about the living conditions. Among the teachers' complaints are communal living standards, such as communal toilets shared by more than 40 people, heating and the inability to cook.

Developed by INEE and the IASC Education Cluster, the EiE harmonized training package combines training materials from the original INEE Minimum Standards, IIEP and the Front Line Responders training packages. The materials include 13 modules with PPTs, Facilitator Guides and exercises as well as guidance on adapting the training materials.

The objectives of this report are to raise awareness about the causes and consequences of violence faced by children in and around schools, to share good practices and strategies on how to prevent and address it, and to discuss the importance of cooperation at local, national, regional and international levels.
