Upperclassmen throw food and other things at underclassmen who walk to lunch. The administration is "cracking down" on the hazers and trying to prevent it. However, things haven't stopped. What do you think about this? Was it important to publish?

Really throwing "dip spit?" That is absolutely disgusting. When I was a younger I had a camp counselor who went to Redwood and described doing similar things. I think this stuff is awful and this makes it easier to see where Redwood kids gets their douchey reputation from. However, I think it was a good idea to publish this article because the more bad press and awareness that comes to this issue, the more it will stop and the kids will realize how dumb it is in the first place.

I think that posting this article was a good idea by the Bark as they are bringing light to a serious topic. I knew of kids having things like slushies and oranges thrown at them, but dip spit? That is one of the grossest things I've ever heard. Hopefully the article will make upperclassmen realize that torturing freshmen might not be a good idea, even if they were hazed the same way as freshmen.

This is awful! I think it's really important that this issue is brought to light in the Bark, but the way they handled this story was really bad. It didn't glorify the issue, persay, but it definitely downplayed the severity of the hazing and made it seem like casual news, not a serious problem. Even though they got quotes from both sides, it made it seem like it was not an issue that really needed to be stopped. As Maile said, it was pointless. This is such an important issue that is so hurtful and disgusting, it cannot be written about in such a carefree manner. But, hey, it does make Tam look better by comparison!

Yeah, I agree that the Bark should have handled this in a more serious manner. WHY is this harmful behavior, is it supported by all upperclassman-what are the mental and physical damage this imposes?
Also constantly referring to the walk the underclassmen take to get off campus as the "Walk Of Shame" even if that is common lingo, is not acceptable journalism.

Such hazing at Redwood has long been a problem and definitely needed to be addressed. After the administration announced that they were going to crack down on such behavior, it was definitely the publications responsibility to publish this article because it was a major school concern. Any administration concern deserves media coverage, but such an event as underclassmen hazing goes beyond the administration and truly is the responsibility of the students. With such a circumstance I believe that it should be the publication's responsibility to use their power of media not to inform that the administration may take action, but to call for action itself. A respected media establishment should have some influence over the student population and the ability to influence some actions. I think that this hazing falls under that category and the Bark should have taken the initiative to condemn this behavior itself quite some time ago. I hope that the Tam News will be more aware of such student based issues and can take action against them.

I agree with Holly that this is a horrible thing to do, I mean I would feel terrible if someone did this to me and all I did was walk down the street. The story seemed to take this lightly and the admins should be doing more to try to stop this hazing. I think the story could have been done better because this is a serious topic, one hazing at lunch could turn into something more dangerous and cause students to feel unsafe at school. This article just shows that Tam is the way to go!

I agree with what everyone has been saying - this new trend by Redwood upperclassmen is just disgusting and rude. I don't think hazing is acceptable, especially when it turns into potential harm or injury into the underclassmen. I do however think this article was just enough information, it shed some light on the topic to create awareness, but not going as far to label specific names to get any people in trouble. If I were to be the one getting hit by food or other mysterious objects, I would feel extremely embarrassed, and I wouldn't want to have a huge article with specific details; my name, who hit me, or anything else related to me getting hit. That just might make it even worse, you could be even more of a target for 'snitching'.
