A New Design for Learning_1.pdf (application/pdf Object) - 0 views

Two years ago Harris student commissioners were given the quest of finding out how to make learning at Harris the best it could be. We were asked to become 'leaders of learning'. This meant discovering new ways of learning from experts - in our schools, across the UK and from around the world. As leaders of learning we have worked for all students at Harris so that learning can be improved for every single one of them

Bolivian feminist Saturnina Quispe Choque talks to Nadia Hausfather. | May 2009 | New I... - 0 views

In El Alto, Saturnina and Felipa learned to knit and weave. Job after job, both received low pay, late pay or no pay at all. At one point, Saturnina's boss was paying her $4 per clothing article which he would then sell in Germany for $70. Saturnina and Felipa grew tired of seeing themselves and other rural migrants exploited. So in 2000 they founded a women's collective called the Integral Association of Kullakas (IAK). 'Kullakas' means 'sisters' in the Aymara language. They used this word to symbolize their interdependence with the Aymara and with the world. Says Saturnina: 'We decided that we needed to help each other.' Nine years later, the collective - of which Saturnina is President - continues to teach handicraft and farming skills. Saturnina's living room is where women come to be trained. The room displays colourful scarves, hats and dolls made by hand, often entirely out of the fleece of the alpaca - similar to the llama - which is warmer and softer than sheep's wool. Fifty per cent of the price of each product goes to the woman who made it, while the rest goes to communal living costs or to buy new materials. The Kullakas are constantly on the lookout for markets so that they can pay women as quickly as possible.

Michael Gove speaks to the Schools Network - The Department for Education - 0 views

  • A big part of this has involved reducing central government prescription for all schools to make heads' and teachers' lives easier and give them the space to focus on what really matters.
  • Overall, our vision for the future is of a self-improving network of schools, innovating and engaging, competing and collaborating, teaching and training, for the benefit of all our children.
  • And yet there is a perception by some that my department isn't especially concerned about such things. That we care more about Tennyson than technology. That our interest is in Ibsen, not iTunes. That we're more Kubla Khan than Khan Academy. This couldn't be further from the truth. I am absolutely committed to ensuring that our school system not only prepares pupils for this changing world, but also embraces the technological advances which are transforming education. My department is thinking hard about this and we'll be saying more in the new year.

  • a genuine engagement with the wondrous world of technological innovation will see children's learning 'liberated from the dead hand of the past.' We owe it to pupils across the country to take this issue seriously.

Dec 1st speech , worth a read. Look out for promises in New Year. Strange how short memories are about changes brought in by Tatcher Gov't based on National Curriculum advocated by Callaghan!
