Project by a Chinese artist who recycles found paper into enormous images and structural forms. Struck me as a very close parallel to our project - he upcycles discarded / forgotten materials into an object of beauty.

there was something vaguely similar (its a tenuous link!) at the barbican a month or two back. a chinese artist who's mother had kept and hoarded virtually every item she consumed for years. He laid all these items out in a room. It was incredible to see the consumption of just one person there - the actual physical space it took up. I guess it does make me think - Is there a way in this project to actually show people the physical size of their data. This could be in terms of the amount of fossils it requires to keep that data there over a year for example. hmmm!

Something similar: the work 'Notice-Forest' by Japanese artist Yuken TERUYA where the installation is made of cut toilet paper roles http://www.yukenteruyastudio.com/projects-1/coner-forest

Project that uses an interesting visual mashup technique to show cultural evolution and threads between different artifacts. An interesting read in-light of our 'mashup>reincarnation' direction that was discussed last week.

  • One might argue that a focus on sustainability is the next logical step after the rise of social networking enabled by the user-generated content of Web 2.0 sites-such as blogs, Wikis, MySpace, YouTube, and Flickr: networking itself is intrinsic to digital technologies, which allow for multiple forms of connectivity, while sustaining networks (of culture, productivity etc.) presents more of a challenge.
  • Addressing the subject of sustainability in the context of art invites a range of questions, among them: How can we define and understand a sustainable art and culture? How does art address the sustainability of culture? How can art practice itself be sustained?

Going Digital - is it more sustainable than print? - 1 views

  • If you're a regular to this blog then you'll know that the paper industry is a big contributor to CO2 emissions, uses huge quantities of water and has petroleum inputs all along the product life-cycle.  It would seem that going digital is the sustainable option; Websites, eBooks and digital magazines don't use paper - Bingo problem solved!

Geocities was shut down by Yahoo! permanently destroying not only data, but a timeslice of the internet's early history. These artists 'saved' 1tb of data from Geocities and are sorting through it. Such an amazing project

As far as movies are concerned, digital, like diamonds, was supposed to be forever. No more dyes to fade, no more film stocks to decay or catch fire. Just pristine digital data, preserved for all time, and release prints as clear and sharp as the images caught by the camera..

Jon Ippolito - if you go to Readings there's a paper called Permanence Through Change. It's a series of papers / lectures given by different interest groups from conservationists to practitioners about whether digital is accelerating at a rate to fast for conservation to keep up. It's a fairly old set of papers and it's interesting to look back on how these various people were attempting to create strategies for conserving work.(everything to DAT!) Ippolito's site is a perennial favourite of mine!
