Micro Persuasion: Three Ways the Media is Innovating with New Interfaces - 0 views

  •
Innovating with New Interfaces Fire and Water Pendant Image by lunarpersuasion via Flickr I have seen very few people that are always on the mark Steve Rubel :-IS "Several months ago I had lunch with a major media company executive who told me that, in the future, content will not be subsidized by banner ads splashed liberally on news pages. This is something that the current economic situation is hopefully accelerating as display ad quality plummets to new lows. I remain convinced that the media must innovate their way out of this situation from both editorial and sales, but no one seems to be really doing so on the advertising side. If you want a glimpse of what's next for media then you need to really look to the editorial side of the house. As we've seen, that's where all the innovation is happening these days - and its changing how we engage with content. Here a look are three promising approaches and their potential implications." Steve Rubel TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 2009 Biography Steve Rubel, SVP, Director of Insights for Edelman Digital, is responsible for keeping Edelman and its clients in the vanguard. He studies global technology, media and online trends and shapes them into actionable insights and marketing communications strategies. In addition, he draws on these insights in his role as a senior strategic advisor to Edelman clients such as PepsiCo, Zagat, Unilever, Microsoft and many others. It was founded in 1845 by George Wilkes, a journalist and sometime transcontinental railroad booster.[1] The editor for most of the 19th century was Richard K. Fox, an immigrant from Ireland. Ostensibly devoted to matters of interest to the police, it was more often a tabloid-like publication, with lurid coverage of murders, Wild West outlaws, and sport. It was well known for its engravings and photographs of scantily clad strippers, burlesque dancers, and prostitutes, often skirting on the edge of what was legally considered obscenity. The National Police Gazette enjoyed considerable popularity in the late 19th century and early decades of the 20th century; but its popularity decreased during the Great Depression. [1] It continued publishing until 1982. [2] Musician Dan Hicks has claimed that he derived inspiration for some of his witty, satiric lyrics by stories he had read in The Police Gazette. The website, www.policegazette.us[3], mimics the Police Gazette style in coverage of current events and contains some archival materials from the original publication that give a

Hunting Down Digg's Bury Brigade - 1 views

  •
Not only allegations that a small group of hyperaggressive users (50 in total) are burying posts on Digg, but with a little unexplained hacking being alluded to, the members of that local cabal are allegedly named. The question this raises being how much faith we should put in strangers who don't explain their methods - but then, if they did, we wouldn't be allowed to link to this article, would we? The fact that a search turned up 16900 hits for "Digg" and "bury brigade" does make this a little easier to believe, though, and a little more of a source of worry for the Stumbleupon user when he hears a suggestion that Digg take over that other service.

Wheelchair : Handicap Products: The Rigid Versus the Folding Wheelchair - 0 views

  •
Manual wheelchair has two types: one with a collapsible frame and the other with a frame that is rigid. The one with a collapsible frame is called the folding wheelchair and it is easier to transport and store than the rigid-framed wheelchair. Because it has reinforcing struts as well as folding and locking mechanisms, the first is relatively heavier than the second. A car can be used to transport a folding wheelchair. It can be placed in the car's trunk instead of having to provide for special moving arrangements or use a bigger vehicle such as a van. The wheelchair that folds usually has an x-frame that makes it possible to fold it sideways. When not in use, it can be kept in a small area of space. When navigating on an uneven surface, the four wheels of the folding wheelchair remain on the ground because its flexible frame of the chair yields and bends to make up for the unevenness of the terrain. This makes it more stable on the uneven surface than the rigid framed chair. On the other hand, it is less stable on a hard floor surface. While making it easy to fold and transport the chair, the parts of the folding chair that can be removed and adjusted can get lost or worn down more easily. The requirement for more frequent repair and replacement of these parts makes the chair that can be folded more expensive to maintain. The wheelchair with a rigid frame can be kept in good condition more economically. The moving parts of the folding wheelchair make the chair's frame more flexible. This flexibility absorbs a significant portion of the force exerted to propel the chair. Thus, it is harder to control and push. Its relatively heavier weight adds to this difficulty, requiring more effort, as well as greater strength and dexterity, to propel and maneuver the wheelchair when compared to the rigid wheelchair. There are certain activities that are not appropriate for the user of a chair that can be folded to engage in. The desirable features of the folding
