Del.icio.us (pronounced as "delicious") was one of the first social bookmarking sites founded by Joshua Schachter in 2003 and was later bought by Yahoo in 2005. Since then, many new social bookmarking sites have been launched and continue to enjoy an ever growing user base. Such sites include, but are not limited to: StumbleUpon, Digg, Reddit, Blue Dot, BookmarkSync, Cloudytags.com, Diigo, Furl, GiveALink.org, Ma.gnolia, My Web, Newsvine, Propeller.com, Reddit, Simpy, and Thoof.

The concept of sharing bookmarks on the net started in 1995 with the appearance of itList.com. The idea became very competitve within just a few years with the following of companies like Bankflip, Blink and Clip2. In 2003 Yahoos del.icio.us introduced the revolutionized idea of tagging, and soon trademarked the term "Social Bookmarking". Not far behind, along came Furl and Stumbleupon as well as Netvouz in 2005. Many others flooded the market with options for social bookmarking across the net. in 2007, IBM announced plans to enter in the social software market, and the BBC added social bookmarking links for all their news to allow readers to tagg.

3) Page Annotation: Can students make notes right on the webpage? Can they highlight content and make virtual sticky notes or comments on specific regions or bits of content?

Ease of Use: Do existing tags automatically show up when you start tagging a new bookmark? How many clicks or screens does it take to rename or delete a tag? How many to edit a bookmark?

To provide even more context, let's assume that we're might want to use the social bookmarking within an institution in the following ways (this list is not necessarily complete): By registering all the students on a particular course to the system so they can use it in course related exercises; By registering every student who joins the institution so they can use it as a resource throughout their registration period, and even beyond (i.e. when they graduate); To allow the system to integrate with pre-existing authentication systems; To allow students to share knowledge between cohorts (e.g. so one year's coohrt can leave a legacy to the next cohort); To provide an environment where student project teams or tutor groups can share bookmarks and comments privately amongst themselves; To provide a bookmarking component in an e-portfolio system; To maintain a needs-serving link with graduates/alumni by continuing to host their bookmarks (perhaps supporting this service by advertising relevant courses or fundraising initiatives to such alumni at a future date;-);
