Most of the lesson plans center around stories written by Volunteers but there are some videos as well. Teachers can also request that a Volunteer visit their classroom to talk with their students.

BrainPOP is an interactive instructional tool that uses animated characters, Tim & Moby to introduce and illustrate content material for social studies, math, science, English, arts, health and technology. The interactive resources include quizzes, movies, timelines, and activity pages. Other resources include lesson plans, classroom tools, curriculum calendars, research and much more. Some of what they offer is free. Unfortunately, there is an annual fee for most of their material. My practicum school uses this program extensively. The students really like using this program and actively engage in the material. At the moment, BrainPOP is featuring a segment on "American Indians" and "Digital Citizenship." Check out the documents sections where they have materials organized by topic. (e.g. Japanese Internment, Tennessee Valley Authority, Anti-Semitism). This could be an important resource for teachers preparing lessons as well as student research.

The really fantastic thing about google earth, which many of you I'm sure know, is that one has the ability to see what the geography and layout of an area at a different point in history was, Ancient Rome being one example. Barack Obama and the 2009Black History Theme

The other great thing about having this website, every year they set the official theme. At my after-school program we use the ASALH theme for our own Gallery of Black History every year, this year's theme will be "The history of Black Economic Empowerment." I think the themes are helpful to focus study because there is so many different people and ideas you could potentially cover, it can be overwhelming. Last year I liked that they incorporated Obama and the centennial of the NAACP.

Particularly, these kinds of resources are approved by the organization, so you know that they are quality. In reading this last chapter of Takaki, I couldn't help but draw comparisons to my personal favorite from this genre of "alternative" interpretations of U.S. History, Howard Zinn's "A People's History of the United States." His chapter on the history of Reconstruction is very insightful and I remember being utterly shocked the first time I read it. In searching for lesson plans based around his text, I found this website. You simply have to sign up for membership (it's free) and you have access to resources and lesson plans based around each of the chapters in his seminal work. This website is co-produced by Howard Zinn himself.

So there are usually Daily Lesson Plans but apparently they are revamping the site so these are temporarily on hiatus. However you CAN access the over 2,000 lesson plans (in the "Lesson Plan Archive" below) they have on the site. I did a search for 9-12 grade economics lessons and hit paydirt. I <3 NY Times.
