I would use this site to provoke debate among my students over the issues involved in First Amendment rights.

This site is valuable for many reasons, but also it provides some intriguing lesson plans for all ages of students.

Many of the newspapers from other countries are also in other languages, however; most countries also have at least one English paper.

Notice that papers can be browsed by language.

The United States section of the site also allows browsing of newspapers by state, so this site would be useful for a lesson or unit on national media; for projects on specific states; or lessons on national current events.

Clicking on a country also gives basic, factual information on that country; like population and a picture of the country's flag.

This is a great site for visual learners. Being able to see political and culutral transformations of continents is an incredible tool for students of all ages. Unfortunately, not all maps on this site are free. There is a nominal fee that charges for acess to more obscure maps.

Great source for lesson plans, primary sources, bibliographies and web casts to supplement teaching about the documents governing the United States.

The drafts featured on this site would be great to illustrate the points of compromise negotiated by the Founding Fathers and to get students to think about how the documents and ultimately, our country's governing principles, might have turned out differently.

This site also features helpful teacher training materials for how to evaluate and utilize primary sources.

The SI uses their extensive collections to provide teachers with excellent resources.

The Smithsonian provides lesson plans about American and other cultures around the world, including Japanese internment, African American life, currency, and much more.

I would use this site if I was required to build my own curriculum for the grades which I was teaching.  It provides a comprehensive collection of big, intermediate, and close up views of content and how to segment it in different approaches.  It could be used in whole or as a supplement to the provided curriculum from a school district.

This site does not immediately provide the sources it uses.  However, when accessing the "Foundations of this Curriculum" link at the top, it leads to the manner in which the curriculum was developed, it's background, and the way in which it continues to be developed.

This site has very strong credibility.  It lists all the project officers, teachers, consultants, etc. that are contributing to the content of the website.  They show the updated material as it becomes available, and allows for evaluations to be offered.  It also has a comments page, which is admittedly very positive.  It also has a links page that links to sources, affiliates, and other useful sites. I think that give the standards provided by UC Berkeley, this site is a very credible option for new social studies teachers looking for help with lesson plans and organization of curriculum.

These regional maps can be used by the teacher to help students locate the area of interest and work on their map reading skills. It might be beneficial to have these mpas laminated around the room so students can reference them when needed.

These subcategories (intro, geography, people, gov, economy, communications, transportation, military, and transnational issues) are all aspects of social studies that can be examined individually or collectively in understanding other countries and comparing it to the US.
