      Another good source that I used in my class with Brec is called "Reading in the Dark", which is geared specifically for using film in the English classroom; however, the book provides a review of this basic terminology of film analysis mentioned here.

      This site doesn't go quite as in depth as I would hope, however these four frameworks do manage to get one thinking about the different ways in which film might be used in the classroom
  • (1) The Moving Image as Representation of History.
  • (2) The Moving Image as Evidence for Social and Cultural History
  • While film can serve as an engaging introduction to a subject, students should be aware of the constant shading and biases, why these occur, and what they accomplish.

      The book I mention in my sticky note below has a great section on critically analyzing documentaries, which some people have a bad habit of regarding as "fact", simply because the film is labeled as a documentary.
  • Documentary footage, however, is never wholly objective.
  • An examination of filming and editing, circumstances surrounding production and distribution, and the producer's intentions are essential for studying such material.

      I have been looking online for awhile, and most of the sources that come up are actual books for purchase like these - I might cross-reference some of these titles with our university library to see which ones come up

    This is sort of a basic review of how and why we as teachers might use film in the classroom. This is my first post on this issue; I am searching for some more in-depth sites that might have models for lesson plans. Many sites have lesson plans based around a specific film; a site that provides lesson plan templates that are applicable across a wide variety of films would be more applicable/useful. However, the comments made here by Paris provide a good base from which to start thinking about the idea.

    This link is a part of a school district website in the state of New York. I found it while searching for information on Socratic seminars. It is really great because it provides all the information one needs to learn about teaching the dialogue method. Informational filters include an overview, elements of a Socratic seminar, frequently asked questions by teachers and students, dialogue and behavior guidelines for using this dialogue method and suggestions for the types of readings or materials that work best with this method. If you like the idea of using the Socratic method in your classroom, you will want to visit this site.

      This is the segment dealing with school finance and the debate over how we should more equitably fund our public schools.

    My search for information on how schools are funded also turned up this website, which has video links to each of the episodes from "Where We Stand: America's Schools in the 21st Century." Each of the clips are certainly interesting, though not really telling us anything we don't already know. The fifth segment deals with the question of how we finance education.

    This website contains a great list of Historic Sites in DC - for example, I have bookmarked the page for the Old Stone House in Georgetown. If you select, "List of Sites" - you will be taken to a listing by neighborhoods of other historic sites in the DC area. This could allow you to search for places near your school that could be a great resource to incorporate into your lessons. Many, including the Old Stone House, offer tours throughout the day. The Old Stone House is also staffed by well-informed Park Rangers who are eager to share their knowledge.

The best part of the site is the part where you can communicate with other teachers about ideas to use in your classroom.

      This notes the shift and commercialization of schooling. "Heads of School" in any situation, private or public, have to be super human in their ability to do everything. They have to please everyone, and do it all with a smile.

      These are the people that hire the teachers that teach the chilrden. It's an interesting cause and effect kind of relationship: people are less willing to leave their old jobs because they can't hire their own kind of people in the next position, meaning the job will be harder and less of their own. It adds a whole additional dynamic.

      This is a really interesting statement and 100% true. School culture after a while becomes a given, so when a new head of school, whether they be of a private school or the superintendent of a public school district, comes in, that hiring board (of directors or of education) needs to now put it out on the table and naturally, things are reassessed in some way. It's kind of a thought provolking idea.

    Defining citizenship eduction in a global society is an increasingly relevant and important education issue today. This site has really great resources for exploring global citizenship. In particular, I liked the global citizenship chart, it is easy to read and it defines key elements by age level. There is also an entire page of related links that could provide further explanation.

      "Democracy in America Teaching Modules" links to C-SPANs Tocqueville lesson plans which are really just lesson plan ideas that we could develop as teachers. There are some good quotes in some of them but mostly they seem to just tell us what other (primary) sources to read.

      "Journal Entries From Tocqueville's Trip" has a hyperlinked map that you can click on to see his journal entries in any specific state. This might be great if you were having different student groups talk about different areas during the antebellum period. Just a resource.

    The Perry-Castaneda Map Collection at the University of Texas-Austin has a great selection of online maps. They have modern political maps, historical maps, maps about history, regional maps, thematic maps (population, climate, energy, ethnic, religious). Many of the maps have large PDF formats that are of great quality and detail.
