I found this short video describing the difference between a PLE and a VLE. I thought it was appropriate for our discussion of PLE's, and PLN's. VLE is a virtual learning environment that allows people to share idea's and content virtually. The author's make a reference to using VLE's in a University environment, which seems to fit in perfectly with this module's discussions. They give wonderful examples of resources for research to social networking. I wonder if we are going to discuss VLE's this semester?

A couple of years ago I stumbled across this method of formatting text for closed web-based LMSs such as Blackboard or Sakai. I finally got around to creating a screencast. I'm sharing this here as this method is also useful for creating content for social network tools such as blogs or wikis. It isn't a substitute for learning HTML, but it's a quick and easy procedure that works as well as a lot of WYSIWYG editors.

I thought this was an interesting example of how to use the "list" functionality of Twitter to create a professional learning community for people interested in virtual worlds. Note they recommend Hootsuite and Tweetdeck for organizing your Twitter account. I use both of these and find they help.

Not sure how helpful this is, but I am using this site for my 503 class. It is very much like Bubble, (but not as cool in my opinion). I am struggling with all of the theory and "big words" in my 503 class, but I move forward.

The article is a good display of how to use social media in a school. I especially liked the first comment I highlighted because it states plainly what we already know that kids are accessing social media sites, we should move with them and teach them how to use those sites safely and for good purposes. The article goes on to explain about sites that can be used for free that are kid and school friendly like edmodo, edublogs and kidblog.org. The article also offers teacher input from those teachers willing to try social media in their class and the results it produced. I think Elizabeth Delmatoff made a strong case for using and keeping her pilot social media program. I couldn't agree more with the concluding statement, "The teachers and parents who embrace social media say the best way to keep kids safe, online or offline, is to teach them."
