From the Guardian: Schools of the future series. Technology just have to mean the end of school libraries.

This article offers advice to anyone working with young people children (Tween) who are interested in books, or if you want to help them discover the world of literature. "A children's book club is a great way for your child to make friends and socialize outside of school." These tips here can help you get started and although directed at the younger end of the spectrum (primary) school, many can be adapted for use with secondary school students.

"Despite the increasing emphasis on technology as a learning tool in the classroom, many school districts still aggressively filter the Internet that teachers and students can access. While the federal Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA) requires that schools filter for pornographic images, many districts are over-filtering, blocking sites that can be used positively for education. There are a lot of myths about how tight these required filters must be."

""Vancouver has done is the opposite to most school districts. It's gone against the grain," Tomassini said. "Librarians are the perfect people to help schools transition into the information age. It made sense to highlight what Vancouver has done. We wanted to create a blueprint for other districts to follow.""
