Manitoba educators do not fear tests, or their results - Winnipeg Free Press - 0 views

  • Math lesson time. Math scores: Manitoba, 468; Yukon, 469; Newfoundland and Labrador, 472; Nova Scotia and Saskatchewan, each 474. That's five provinces within 1.2 percentage points of each other. Put another way: Billy got 80 per cent on his test. Sally got 81 per cent on her test. Math lesson, part two: The creators of this test, the Council of Ministers of Education, rightly points out that the margin of error on these scores is greater than the differences in these scores. In plain English, that means that the statisticians who crunch the data are saying that the scores are basically equivalent.
  • Manitoba remains the child-poverty capital of Canada
  • Math lesson, part three: Manitoba was the only jurisdiction in Canada to have 100 per cent of the selected schools do the PCAP assessment.

Tablets Will Transform the Classroom [OPINION] - 0 views

  • How on earth does a teacher create an engaging lesson for 32 different learners, especially when each learner carries his own individualized learning style? It’s at this very point that tablet integration gets exciting.
  • When the correct apps are applied to the appropriate subject on a creative touchable interface, learners are free to work at different paces, in the same class and with the same teacher. The teacher then becomes free to work with the different ability groups, and to focus on developing the day’s curriculum.
  • I’m hoping that teachers continue to welcome the forthcoming opportunities in digital education. The tablet interface and app potential is a great step forward for the brilliant educators across the world.

Critical Review of Connectivism: A Learning Theory for the Digital Age - 0 views

  • An effective personal knowledge network can provide access to new ideas, innovations, successful experiments, failed results, and, if constructed with diversity in mind, contrary opinions that can be cause for reflection, re-consideration, and personal growth.
  • Knowledge should no longer be considered a stable artifact to be passed from one person to another, but instead should be viewed as a process, always changing and growing.

College 2.0: Teachers Without Technology Strike Back - Technology - The Chronicle of Hi... - 1 views

  • Ultimately the importance of technology or its absence pales in comparison to the importance of a teacher's attitude, effort, and success. More opinionated academics and nonacademics alike need to view teachers in action and see whether they connect with their students and get the job done. Some of these wonderful and successful teachers will have beautifully planned and integrated technological endeavors, and some will have a whiteboard, chalkboard, or a circle of desks in the center of the room.

The problem with 'sext' ed - 1 views

  • Sexting is just the silent canary in the coal mine. It's the sign, not the cause, of the dangerously cavalier attitudes toward sex and sexuality that have been building up in teen culture for years now. The only surefire cure is a full-blown evacuation -- a complete retreat from the mainstream movies, videos, video games and songs of the day that sexualize kids before they've even reached puberty (or, in some cases, potty training).
