My students learn about writing mostly as they are writing. They learn very little from a failing grade, except that they can’t write.

Because I have access to their documents so early, I learn much more about my students’ writing and the issues that they need to overcome. This positions me for better teaching. It positions the students for better learning. That’s a win-win.

The reality is that most families will go through periods of heavy and light media use, but, so long as there's a balance, kids should be just fine.

Stommel, who's been engaged in many debates over laptop bans on Twitter, calls the issue "weirdly divisive" but also, in the end, "a red herring." Instead of an "authoritarian approach," he suggests a conversation.

a larger issue when it comes to modern media and our kids….we parents don’t understand it and as a result, don’t want to talk to them about it.
