Open States is a collection of tools that make it possible for citizens to track what is happening in their state's capitol by aggregating information from all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico. Using the site is simple: enter a U.S. address or select a state to start to research bills, review voting records, contact elected officials and more. When you get there you'll find many many options, long term it will amaze folks all the information tucked into that website, but for today I just want folks to learn how to get to a bill, and bill amendments.

I have been an activist for many years. I was born in 1951, and came of age in the Washington, DC area in 1969. The place was overflowing at that time with worthwhile causes to be active in. I was active in the civil rights movement, the women's movement (and am discouraged with some of the current parts of that movement) and the anti-Vietnam War movement (while supporting the troops themselves, at times a delicate balancing act). So, I am not an newbie to activism. I am, however, a newbie to having an activist blog. The cause which I am addressing myself to in this instance is liberty and justice. A broad topic, one might think, but one which I have found to be sorely under addressed. In particular, I am very concerned with the registries now popping up all over the place. The sex offender registry is one which impacts me personally. I have two sons who are listed on it.

SOCCPN is a professional network for individuals working in sex offender civil commitment programs. We provide a forum for research, discussion and sharing of information related to the effective management, assessment, and treatment of individuals held under civil commitment laws addressing sexual violence and/or sexual dangerousness.

Our Mission: Breaking the cycle of crime by strengthening families through support, education, and advocacy. About 200,000 adult men and women are incarcerated at any one time in county jails and state correctional facilities in Texas. The state has the unenviable distinction of having more individuals behind bars than any other state in the country. Left behind are family members and friends: 55 percent leave behind a spouse, and 85 percent or more leave behind a parent and/or a child. In fact, about 75 percent of male inmates and more than 95 percent of female inmates have a child younger than 18. More than half have a child younger than 10.

Nothing is more important than keeping our children safe. We have taken decisive steps to help families protect their children, especially from sex offenders, people who according to study after study are likely to commit their crimes again and again. We've all read too many tragic stories about young people victimized by repeat offenders. That's why in the crime bill we required every state in the country to compile a registry of sex offenders, and gave states the power to notify communities about child sex offenders and violent sex offenders that move into their neighborhoods.

This page is here to document the ever growing vigilantism of ex-sex offenders and exactly why the online hit-list needs to be taken offline and used by police only. If this were being done to any other group of people, the registry would be taken offline quickly.

SORNA refers to the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act which is Title I of the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act of 2006 (Public Law 109-248). SORNA provides a comprehensive set of minimum standards for sex offender registration and notification in the United States. SORNA aims to close potential gaps and loopholes that existed under prior law and generally strengthens the nationwide network of sex offender registration and notification programs. Additionally, SORNA: - Extends the jurisdictions in which registration is required beyond the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the principal U.S. territories, to include also federally recognized Indian tribes. - Incorporates a more comprehensive group of sex offenders and sex offenses for which registration is required. - Requires registered sex offenders to register and keep their registration current in each jurisdiction in which they reside, work, or go to school. - Requires sex offenders to provide more extensive registration information. - Requires sex offenders to make periodic in-person appearances to verify and update their registration information. - Expands the amount of information available to the public regarding registered sex offenders. - Makes changes in the required minimum duration of registration for sex offenders.

The SMART Office was authorized by the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act of 2006 to: - administer the standards for the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Program set forth in Title 1 of the Adam Walsh Act; - administer grant programs relating to sex offender registration and notification authorized by the Adam Walsh Act and other grant programs authorized by the Adam Walsh Act as directed by the Attorney General; - cooperate with and provide technical assistance to states, the District of Columbia, principle U.S. territories, units of local government, tribal governments, and other public and private entities involved in activities related to sex offender registration or notification or to other measures for the protection of children or other members of the public from sexual abuse or exploitation; and - perform such other functions as the Attorney General may delegate.

Over the last few years, Georgia's General Assembly has passed several law that prohibit people on the sex offender registry from living or working in certain locations within 1,000 feet of: schools, child care facilities, school bus stops and other areas where minors congregate. On June 20, 2006, the Southern Center for Human Rights ("SCHR") filed a lawsuit on behalf of everyone on the registry challenging these residency and employment restrictions. The lawsuit was filed in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia in Atlanta. The defendants in the case are Governor Sonny Perdue, Attorney General Thurbert Baker, and all of the sheriffs in Georgia.
