This NYT article describes a ten year plan to fund neuroscience research that is analogous (in terms of scope) to the human genome project. This article could be used in conjunction with technology discussions (like Kurzweil), aging (lots of implications for alzheimers, etc.), and/or role of governance (establishing long-term goals, funding, etc.)

According to UNICEF, 23.1% of American children under the age of seventeen live in poverty, which makes the United States rank second out of thirty-five economically advanced countries ranked in that category. Romania ranks first, with 25.5% of children living in poverty.
