"On June 3, Brundtland held a keynote speech at Fudan University for the 15th anniversary of the joint BI-Fudan MBA program. Other speakers at the event included Dag Morten Dalen, Senior Vice President of BI, Lu Xiongwen, Dean of the Fudan School of Management, Professor Torger Reve, and Paul Utvik, an alumni of the BI-Fudan MBA Program. In her speech, Brundtland recognized China's importance as a collaborator in the global fight against climate change, and the challenges faced by the country in its efforts to balance economic growth with sustainable development. Citing former World Bank economist David Wheeler, she stated that China is one of the countries most vulnerable to the effects of climate change, like extreme weather. Brundtland said that the question is not if China should grow, but rather how it should grow, and that the advances made by China in green technology put it on the right track for making sustainable prosperity a reality. "In the last quarter of the century, corollaries were added: "focus tightly on maximizing shareholder value"; "strategy is about coping with competition"; and "lower costs by off-shoring." These principles worked as long as oligopolies dominated the marketplace. Firms could succeed with limited innovation, often by copying what had already been pioneered by others."

Will Asia Lead?  climate change, regional governance and emergent identities - 0 views

  •
Will Asia lead the world in green technologies and in the political-economic transition to sustainability? Can Asia bury past conflicts and create stronger regional institutions including perhaps, step by step, an Asian Union? In what ways could Asia's traditional cultures - Islamic, Tantric, Taoist, Confucian, Buddhist and Vedic - be resources in inventing an alternative more hybrid cultures?

Title: Scenarios 2040Location: The Bell Tower on 34thLink out: Click hereDescription: More vivid and dynamic than forecasting or visioning, scenarios are stories based on rigorous research, analysis and community interviews that help us understand how the powerful driving forces that affect our world - and the choices we make right now - could affect our region's future decades from now. In 2009, the Center for Houston's Future embarked upon Scenarios 2040, the largest public-interest, business-led, regional scenario project in the country. The resulting scenarios will describe different future worlds we might face in the year 2040, and will be used to generate wide public discussion that will help individuals, organizations, business, and government identify their own options and responses to different future worlds. These scenarios will help us learn how to protect and nurture what we value, and achieve what we want to achieve - a healthy balance between competitiveness and sustainability. Start Time: 18:00Date: 2011-10-04

Digital economy growing pains | Technology Spectator - 0 views

  •
Last year the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) put out an interesting long-term report, Vision 2050, in which it looked at various sectors of society and the economy. Interestingly, they describe the next ten years, till 2020, as the Turbulent Teens and indicate that only after that period will we arrive in Transformation Time, which will last till 2050. During that period we will be able to actually implement and manage many of the ideas, suggestions, technologies and new business models that are needed to create a sustainable economy, society and environment.

Sustainable Futures - 0 views

Our role is to build citizenship by awakening people to the value that social responsibility creates for us - individually, in our businesses, in our communities, in our countries and in the world. To build a solid foundation for the future, we have to find the balance between what we take and what we give. If we believe this, we must remain critical of our actions and choices.
