The lab was founded in 1987 with the goal of deepening both research and practice in intelligent systems and how they apply to teaching and learning. Faculty, staff, and students within the laboratory contribute to numerous academic areas, such as user modeling, artificial intelligence, adaptive hypermedia, e-learning, and information visualization. The laboratory is headed by Dr. Gordon McCalla, and is funded in part by the the TeleLearning Network Centres of Excellence (1995-1999), and the LORNET NSERC Research Network (2003-Present). ARIES is one of the many laboratories within the Department of Computer Science at the University of Saskatchewan.

ASWC 2008 will present the latest research and development of the Semantic Web and its related technologies. It will include a Research Track, a Semantic Web in Use Track, a Poster and Demonstration Track.

September 23, 2008 Research, done by MarketCap in cooperation with Aduna, shows that more than 60 percent of companies with over 200 employees, intend to invest in a project that uses semantic technology (Web 3.0) within a year's time. Almost 10 percent already uses semantic technology, or has already defined a semantic technology project. The fact that 60 percent of the companies plan to invest indicates an enormous increase of the use of semantic technology in the coming 12 months. Companies abound in information, but only a tiny amount is used by managers, either because most of the information is not visible or connections are not, or cannot be made. This is the situation mid-2008, but with the rise of semantic technologies this will change drastically in the coming years. More and more information will come to light and it will become easier to judge its usefulness.

The big question for many researchers in the area of educational systems now is what is the next step in the evolution of e-learning? Are we finally moving from a scattered intelligence to a coherent space of collaborative intelligence? How close we are to the vision of the Educational Semantic Web and what do we need to do in order to realize it? Two main challenges can be seen in this direction: on the one hand, to achieve interoperability among various educational systems and on the other hand, to have automated, structured and unified authoring support for their creation. In the spirit of the Semantic Web a key to enabling the interoperability is to capitalize on the (1) semantic conceptualization and ontologies, (2) common standardized communication syntax, and (3) large-scale service-based integration of educational content and functionality provision and usage.

Recent progress in mobile broadband communication and semantic web technology is enabling innovative internet services that provide advanced personalization and localization features. The goal of the SmartWeb project (duration: 2004-2007) is to lay the foundations for multimodal user interfaces to distributed and composable semantic Web services on mobile devices. The SmartWeb consortium brings together experts from various research communities: mobile services, intelligent user interfaces, language and speech technology, information extraction, and semantic Web technologies (see www.smartweb-project.org).

a few researchers but no solid examples I know a few people (especially some professors in the teaching-oriented universities) who are working on this technology. But as far as I know, they are individual experiments and no significant examples so far that are really exciting.

Looking back from this point in time, I cannot help to ask myself: while information and communication technologies (ICT) have achieved incredible advances in the last decade or so and have been successfully applied in numerous fields to improve the quality of our everyday life, why do we still find old fashioned services dominant in public health care? The International Semantic Web Conference is a major international forum at which research on all aspects of the Semantic Web is presented. The Semantic Web Science Association Web, SWSA, is the Association that organizes the academic conferences on Semantic Web technology. The International Semantic Web Conference (ISWC) is the leading conference for research on Semantic Web topics. It is held annually and is the successor of the Semantic Web Working Symposium (SWWS).

"Many languages are in serious danger of being lost and if nothing is done to prevent it, half of the world's approximately 6,500 languages will disappear in the next 100 years. Language data are central to the research of a large social science community, including linguists, anthropologists, archeologists, historians, sociologists, and political scientists interested in the culture of indigenous people. The death of a language entails the loss of a community's traditional culture, for the language is a unique vehicle for its traditions and culture. In this paper, we describe the effort undertaken at Wayne State University to preserve endangered languages using the state-of-the-art information technologies. We discuss the issues involved in such an effort, and present the architecture of a distributed digital library which will contain various data of endangered languages in the forms of text, image, video and audio files and include advanced tools for intelligent cataloguing, indexing, searching and browsing information on languages and language analysis. Various Semantic Web technologies such as XML, OLAC, and ontologies are used so that the digital library is developed as a useful linguistic resource on the Semantic Web."
