Testosterone therapy aids symptoms of Parkinson's disease. Whether low T is an associated finding or plays a role has yet to be determined. However, we do know that androgens play an anti-inflammatory role in men and we know that inflammation plays a role in the neurodegenerative disease that is Parkinson's disease.
It appears that Levodopa administration in those with Parkinson's disease will deplete methylation (SAMe), and thus increase homocysteine, which is a neurotoxin. Additionally, depletion of methylation is associated with depression, commonly seen in Parkinson's disease
Lower LDL levels associated with increased risk of Parkinson's disease. LDL levels < 113 were associated with a 3.5 fold increase in Parkinson's disease compared to LDL of 138.
IV glutathione shown to be same and provide mild improvement in Parkinson's disease. This is a small pilot study, but a good place to start. The likelyhood is that glutathione is more beneficial early in Parkinson's disease to slow disease progression.
Good review of the current data on the role of nutrition in Parkinson's disease. Take home, a lot of data is conflicting. But the figure at the end does well to summarize: diet rich in polyphenols in fruits/veggies, carotenoids, resveratrol, Vitamin C, D, E, and MUFA and PUFA are neuroprotective compared to dairy being neurodegenerative.
pilot study finds that NAC protects the dopaminergic neurons in the brains in cell line stud. Clinical found increased dopamine binding in the brain compared to placebo in individuals with Parkinson's disease.
high dose CoQ10 shown to slow disease progression in Parkinson's disease. A similar study had shown the same finding in Huntington's disease. Both are excitotoxic diseases
