  • Cherrier et al [17] evaluated a sample of 32 subjects, which included 17 men with mild cognitive impairment and 15 with Alzheimer's disease.     The benefits of anti-depressants in mild to moderate depression is no better than placebo.  However, in severe depression and with increasing severity, anti-depressants are better than placebo.

    Some with depression are found to have elevated salivary cortisol and others are not.  Likewise, some with depression have low serotonin and others do not.  The point is that the biochemistry of depression is complex and cortisol, serotonin, 5-HTP, tryptophan all may play a role in an individuals "depression".   One thing not included is the out.  How are these individuals metabolizing their cortisol?  As the author stated, some are hyper secretors of cortisol; why not hyper metabolizers?  Weibe has shown many are.

    Interesting: study finds no association between tryptophan and serotonin levels and depression.  The study found no difference between 44 "depressed" perimenopausal women and 19 "without depression".  Serotonin therapy of depression??  However, poor sleep and hot flashes did.

    amazingly, up to 20% of patents with depression do worse on anti-depressant therapy (SSRI).  These are labeled non-responders, but when compared to placebo, the difference was significant.  Maybe, we should check their neurotransmitters first?

    Elderly individuals with the lowest normal TSH values were found to be associated with increased depressive symptoms.  These patients were clearly not hyperthyroid.  This fits with other data that points to increased inflammation and reduced TSH levels.  Increased inflammation is associated with increased depression.
