Drinking alcohol, gambling, eating, engaging in sexual relations and utilizing the web can all turn from what is viewed as a common activity, to a darker, increasingly destructive compulsion. Addiction treatment, for example, addiction counselling services, is critical for helping individuals perceive the issue and make the steps to recuperation.

    Only abstract available here, but sugar in the form of sucrose found to lower cortisol.  Increased activity in the hippocampus was evident in the sucrose arm of this study.  Both of these activities will lead to stress induced food addictions--particularly of sugar.  Sugar is highly addictive and should be especially avoided in children.  Of note, this study followed the cortisol levels through saliva.

    Very disturbing trend.  Study finds that opioid addicted infants are on a dramatic risk in the US.  This study looked at Neionatal abstinence syndrome from 2000 to 2009.  This follows the significant increase in maternal opioid prescription use.  We physicians must do better.  Patients must demand better.  This study just focused on hospital costs directly associated with the Neonatal period.  No cost estimates are evaluated for long-term care.
