The Open Dinosaur Project was founded to involve scientists and the public alike in developing a comprehensive database of dinosaur limb bone measurements, to investigate questions of dinosaur function and evolution. We have three major goals:1) do good science; 2) do this science in the most open way possible; and 3) allow anyone who is interested to participate. And by anyone, we mean anyone! We do not care about your education, geographic location, age, or previous background with paleontology. The only requirement for joining us is that you share the goals of our project and are willing to help out in the efforts.

Beginning in 2006, NASA's Stardust@home citizen science project allows anyone with Internet access to help in the search for the first samples of solid matter from outside the solar system. Prior to all the nonsense with the Research Works Act, I had been having a discussion with Heather Morrison about licenses and Open Access and peripherally the principle of requiring specific licenses of authors. I realized then that I needed to lay out the background thinking that leads me to where I am.

Data Observation Network for Earth (DataONE) is the foundation of new innovative environmental science through a distributed framework and sustainable cyberinfrastructure that meets the needs of science and society for open, persistent, robust, and secure access to well-described and easily discovered Earth observational data.

The Open Science Grid (OSG) advances science through open distributed computing. The OSG is a multi-disciplinary partnership to federate local, regional, community and national cyberinfrastructures to meet the needs of research and academic communities at all scales

The Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Climate Research Facility is a multi-platform scientific user facility that supports research for addressing the major uncertainties of climate models - clouds and aerosols. ARM provides the national and international research community unparalleled infrastructure for obtaining precise observations of key atmospheric phenomena needed for the advancement of atmospheric process understanding and climate models. Within DOE, ARM's major clients are the Atmospheric System Research (ASR), Regional and Global Climate Modeling and Earth System Modeling programs. The primary ARM objective is improved scientific understanding of the fundamental physics related to interactions between clouds, aerosols, and radiative feedback processes in the atmosphere; in addition, ARM has enormous potential to advance scientific knowledge in a wide range of interdisciplinary Earth sciences.

Perhaps slower to take to Web-based dissemination than some professions, science-the endeavor for which the World Wide Web was developed-has gradually been adopting new online methods for distributing knowledge.

Foldit was founded by the University of Washington Center for Game Science in collaboration with the Baker lab. In the last decade, scientists repeatedly failed to find a solution to the structure of a protein-cutting enzyme from an AIDS-like virus. The scientists have decided to collect a group of gamers and challenged them to produce an accurate model of the enzyme: users are tasked with folding known proteins and are scored on how well they manage to accomplish this task while taking into consideration the physical properties of the molecule. In less then ten days, the gamers came up with the desired solution.

But it's not just a neat toy; some extraordinary things have been discovered with its one-click access to satellite imagery.

Jimmy Wales, the iconoclastic founder of Wikipedia, made a troubling announcement at the seventh annual Wikipedia conference: Nobody wants to edit Wikipedia anymore. Is Wikipedia going to shrivel up and fade away? Wales told the AP that the number of Wikipedia editors is slowly dwindling.

A real-time, online checklist program, eBird has revolutionized the way that the birding community reports and accesses information about birds. Launched in 2002 by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society, eBird provides rich data sources for basic information on bird abundance and distribution at a variety of spatial and temporal scales. eBird's goal is to maximize the utility and accessibility of the vast numbers of bird observations made each year by recreational and professional bird watchers. It is amassing one of the largest and fastest growing biodiversity data resources in existence.

A few days ago, the Guardian ran a Q&A session with Brian Cox and Jeff Forshaw. Cox and Forshaw are professors of physics at the University of Manchester, both involved in research with the Large Hadron Collider at Cern. Cox is of course well known for his wonderful media exploits on the BBC.
