This is a great blog from HBR that explores the importance of change readiness (implies that change is always present) as opposed to change management (implies change is new and needs to be managed) and which communication tools can support change.

It always amazes me how people are finding new ways to communicate with out another. Changing the name of your wi-fi network to passive-agressively tell off your neighbour - hilarious. Just shows how much communication takes place on a virtual platform.

If you're a former "burner" like me - this article presented a really interesting look at how digital communications and social networking are affecting an event that has always been about rejecting mass media/the ordinary and cultivating face to face relationships. 

An interesting look at how innovations in technology and communications devices are affecting healthcare. 

This is a bit OT: A new Zellers ad that's pretty funny regarding the Zellers-Target takeover controversy. Bringing some sympathy to Zellers (and their workers by default). Did they communicate it well? I think so.

Emojis represent a move to standardize emoticons. I'd like to emphasize the "emotion" part of the portmanteau. Emotions are devastatingly difficult things to transmit electronically. But try we shall! Emotions are information- and context-rich. We want people to know how we feel because that piece of information provides a lot in any communication context. How often do you use emoticons or emojis? Why do we try to avoid using emoticons and emojis in formal/professional communication? Why is it inappropriate to display emotions in a professional setting?

I mentioned Myspace a lot in the discussion for next week. Here is an example of a social media that essentially died but is trying to come back. Aggressively. The interface seems to highly draw upon Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest... Will the redesign work? Do we want a Twitter-Facebook hybrid? Or do users like having them separate? What will the new Myspace mean for communicators who use social media?

Gawker's Adrian Chen tracks down the identity of reddit.com's violentacrez. I'd never heard of this person, but the headline grabbed my attention. The article has some really great insight into how reddit is run and the role of moderators on the sites boards. Also an interesting read in regards to the politics of online identity protection and the role of anonymity in online communications.

This is a really interesting scholarly article I came across whilst putting together my last scholarly blog. The study examines the relationship between the use of Facebook and the formation and maintenance of social capital.

The Circa app for news just launched and I'm already pretty obsessed with it. For my personal life I love this because it is a quick easy way to catch up on daily news. From a communication perspective it makes us rethink what is essential to a news story. Instead of lengthy (or even short) news stories, Circa packages up facts, quotes and photos into a very easy to read format. This app speaks to our constant need for information.

Re: "The next big thing" this study suggests that only 58% of businesses have a social media strategy. Twitter is apparently on the way down. Pintrest and Tumblr are on their way up.

In light of our conversation about Prezi last class, here is an article that suggests Prezi is more than just a presentation tool, but rather can be used by businesses to advertise their services, or introduce their products on their websites. You can even develop a website entirely in Prezi by first creating the Prezi and then linking to it with an iframe tag.
