This is a story of a little girl that touched my heart as I read and looked at the pictures. The story has part 1 and part 2 with pictures of her as she underwent treatment for bone cancer. Kaela ends up with an amputation and a prosthetic leg. Brave little girl with a happy ending after all.

There has been a technology boom in wearable fitness trackers lately and I was curious to see if there was anything available to individuals who use a wheelchair as their main mode of transportation, whether due to LE amputations, spinal injury, etc. I came across this company who has created a fitness tracker specially designed for those who use a wheelchair. It not only maps incline, speed, heart rate and distance, but also aggregates data used for terrain mapping. This info can be used to give options for routes based on ease of maneuverability and safety.

This is a website that sells products to facilitate sexual intercourse for people who have SCIs or amputations. It is something I never realized existed!

This is the amputee coalition website. What an amazing resource for patients, families, and therapist. This website provides current research, peer support, and even has detailed discussion about how to deal with phantom pain. Great website and resource!

Signal Strengthening An important goal following TMR is strengthening reinnervated muscles so they generate electrical signals that can be detected by surface electrodes. Strengthening the contraction of the transferred-nerve muscles before the fitting helps the patient develop the adequate endurance needed to proceed with TMR myoelectric prosthetic training.

This site lists and gives a great diagram of the levels of UE amputation. It also describes the different types of prosthetics and what they are best used for.

this webpages gives a general overview of body-powered vs. electric-powered UE prosthesis. Advantages and disadvantages, improvements, and types of terminal devices. There is some interesting information on the different types of hands and gives info re: an experimental hand being engineered by students at Rutgers University that can be controlled through human thought.

I was reading Early Chapter 33 Amputation and Prosthetics, and there was a paragraph regarding future developments and plans of action. Here, Osseointegration was mentioned, and I had never heard of this term. So, here is an article that describes the process - basically an implant is inserted into the bone of the residual limb. The prosthetic can be attached to this and a socket is not needed. This article talks about the benefits and drawbacks.

I like this handout cause it doesn't look like a medical handout! It looks fun and those that just had an amputation need a good laugh. The handout is a cartoon which makes it a little more interesting.

This is a more detailed story of what we talked about today in class. It includes the list of pros and cons, so I thought it might be useful for people to have access to.

The world of prosthesis is constantly growing in technology and this video shows just how far technology has come. The bionics are controlled by neural commands rather than nerve impulses, which allows for a more accurate ambulation. In this video Hugh Herr describes how the bionics are made and what the measuring process is for the patient. I think this will help reinforce what we learned this past Friday about amputated limbs. Also, there is a lot of information as to whom these bionics would be good for and how one may get one.
