This story is about a firefighter who lost his arm fighting a fire. His arm was amputated and the he was fitted with a prosthetic. He worked with an OT and prosthetic forever! He wanted to be able to return to his dream job of fighting a fire! He worked very hard and he had his share of his ups and downs. I am not going to tell you all the ending, so please read it. It is not long at all and will take you 10 minutes at the max.

This is a really good reflection on the impact of OT specifically in amputation and from the client's perspective.

Great catalog for prosthetics

I hope everyone has a chance to watch this video of Zac Vawter. It's really amazing to see how far technology is advancing for individuals with amputations.

I feel this is a great resource for individuals and their loved ones upon initial injury or diagnosis of an illness. It has short explanations about many different common conditions from spinal cord injury and questions one might have to psychological disorders. I feel it could be a great way for people to find out more if they wish to do it in a more private setting. It talks about sports, travel, school, work etc. It is based in Europe. Their ambassador's have disabilities so they have more insight than others might!

Limb loss is always devastating, both physically and emotionally. I've frequently told patients who have lost a limb or are facing the prospect of losing one, "You are going through something that no one should ever have to go through." Limb loss is, however, especially devastating whenever it happens to a child.

Advances in bionic hands have restored a sense of touch to two patients for more than a year, report US scientists. The men can now delicately pluck the stalks out of cherries. Sensors on the artificial hand are used to send signals directly to the nerves, the study, published in Science Translational Medicine, said.

Speaking of amputations. This is very promising area !

Relevant to chapter 33 for Exam II, I found this article explaining early postoperative prosthesis for transtibial lower extremity amputations. It has pictures of the prosthetic and wrappings, as well as, proper pillow propping and bed positioning.

This may be old news from almost a year ago, but i found this on the Vanderbilt website about how Dr. Michael Goldfarb has been working on robotic legs that emulates healthy limbs. It explains his research and his building of these legs. I found in the article that Dr. Goldfarb was also named one of the top 10 innovators who changed the world in 2013 for developing an exoskeleton that allows paraplegics to stand up and walk.

This is an easy-to-understand webpage that describes the parts of a LE prosthesis. The material is more descriptive and more current, in my opinion, than what appears in our textbook. It also includes sections on prosthesis fitting and care of the residual limb. This resource would be good to recommend to a patient prior to or shortly after amputation. It also has professional version of the same material.

I love this lady! She is an OTA who has a lower extremity amputation and allows the viewer to see the real life struggles in a first person point of view. She gives good advice for safe showering/bathing and points out different ways for different people. Lastly, this video will help home health OTA's to know what an amputee may need to make life easier (stand up shower vs. bathtub).
