Coffee habits are shaped by your genes, research finds - 1 views

  •
Whether coffee makes a person anxious or helps boost their memory may come down to their DNA, according to research that suggests further studies on caffeine should be customised to a person's genetic profile.
  •
Interesting research on how caffeine can improve memory and protect against destruction of brain cells in one segment of the population AND cause yet another segment to have increased anxiety and nervousness.

Skin-Like Patch Monitors Your Heart - 1 views

  •
Photo credit: John A. Rogers/University Of Illinois Researchers from Northwestern University and the University of Illinois have developed a discreet, wearable device that provides around-the-clock monitoring of both heart and skin health. The skin-like patch measures a mere five centimeters square and is designed to be worn directly on the skin, for example on a user's wrist much like a band aid.

I thought this was a neat idea, based on the lessons recently on cardiopulmonary health.

Health benefits for those who stick to their knitting - 2 views

  •
Just my style! What a great article! This article talks about the great benefits of knitting and what knitting does to keep your hands healthy by way of function. It's a great workout for your hands, fingers and forearms, but not a strenuous workout. Knitting also is a stress relief activity, can improve your mood, relieves anxiety and depression. I have not tried knitting. I have always cross-stitched. I can tell you, when I finish school, this is definitely on my bucket list, along with learning to paint!

10 Fun Ways To Reduce Your Cortisol Levels - 3 views

  •
These 10 fun ways to reduce cortisol levels are achievable by most anyone. Lissa has even created and provided a free self healing kit if any of these activities, particularly if you find it hard to sit still and be quiet, are difficult. I like the fact that each activity is very accessible and for the most part cost free. For example, laughter, try to win a stare down and not laugh. Or...listen to someone else laugh, that will get you every time... And it's FREE!!! This lady also provides some pretty cool TED talks, adding science to the topic.

Kitchen Burn Prevention/Commercial - 1 views

This website stresses how serious work related kitchen fires can be. It states that commercial kitchen fires are the most common among all kitchen fires and can be prevented by following their simple tips. Kitchens in busy restaurants are cluttered with too many personnel and too little room to maneuver, this can lead to a scalding or fire accident easily. The suggestions on this website make it simple to reduce the risk.

Occupational Therapy in Oncology and Palliative Care - Google Books - 1 views

This on-line edition of Occupational Therapy in Oncology and Palliative Care edited by Jill Cooper does an excellent job explaining in layman terms the different aspects of cancer to include tumor classification, etiologies, symptoms, diagnosis and treatments. It then discusses the different reasons some OTs decide to work in this specialty and how the OT can better deal with the stresses they encounter in treating those with cancer. I would definitely read this in its entirety if I chose to work with cancer patients.

I think everyone should watch this video that is working with cancer patients. Knowing what our patients might experience will be our biggest tool when treating.
  •
Wow, this video really puts everything in perspective, especially the girl mentioning her still being worried about homework (day-to-day worries still causing her stress). Gives a unique perspective from young survivors of cancer as well. Typically when one thinks of cancer survivors they generally picture people who are older. I would imagine cancer patients that are younger may have some differing needs in terms of a practitioner's psychosocial approach. Great post!

Taking Care of YOU: Self-Care for Family Caregivers - 0 views

  •
The focus of care in OT is often directly on the client, and rightly so, but it is also important to support and educate the caregiver in ways to reduce their stress and provide them with resources such as the article posted here. This article discusses the importance of caregivers self-care, the benefits of attending support groups, and overcoming personal barriers. Being a caregiver is a very tough job both physically and mentally, so it is important that OT practitioners advocate for caregivers as well as the clients for which they care.

How Does Yoga Help Arthritis - 0 views

  •
Interesting information and such a proactive treatment for clients at home! Yoga can help to relieve arthritis pain by creating more mobility in the joints and flexibility in the muscles around the joints. While pain should be respected, this article does point out the "use it or lose it" idea. Not to mention the other benefits Yoga would offer, such as deep breathing to reduce stress.
