While horror might be a mainstay for console games today, there was a time when a home video game system didn't have enough power to run the terrifying graphics needed to create a rich and frightening universe. So the place where the spooky classics went to get their fright on was on computers. From PC, Mac and even a few 8-bit models, the place to experience real terror was on the hard drive. The success of Space Invaders in 1978 brought Arcades from a small budding market, into a booming business. Meanwhile in homes the Atari 2600 was seeing monumental success. To meet the demand companies jumped on the bandwagon, launching numerous titles into development.

Up until 1978 video games were still in their salad days. Since the first coin-op video games launched in 1971 popularity was continually growing as mechanical games were slowly being phased out and replaced with the likes of Pong. By the end of '78 video games exploded into pop culture madness, mainly thanks to the number one pick on our list, Space Invaders. This was also the year that introduced the world to the first trac-ball game, the first continuously scrolling game and the first POV driving game. These are the most popular, innovative and groundbreaking titles from one of the grooviest year at the arcade.

Not only was the Nintendo Entertainment System the console that resurrected video games after the industry crash of '83, but the system's top titles set the gameplay standard by which modern platforming, RPG, action, adventure and narrative are designed today. These are the most influential and trend setting titles from the NES.

Ah, digital amore! Even in the world of gaming romance always springs eternal. While most of the lady loves are Princesses who need rescuing by their dashing working class heroes, video games have continually shared the same goal we all have in the real world, true love.

Let's face it, nothing goes together better than food and video games. Heck, for many of us retro gamers of the '80s, the local video arcade and pizza place were one in the same. Perhaps that's how Nolan Bushnell, co-founder of Atari, came up with the idea of starting Chucky Cheese.

A classic game isn't likely to have come out in the past 10 years. Even this site doesn't consider it a classic unless the game was made before 1999; but that doesn't mean there haven't been major achievements in retro gaming during the first decade of the new millennium.

Nintendo's Virtual Console is a key component of the Wii, granting the system not just a little backwards compatibility but a whole lot of it. Eventually, it could be in the same league as Turner's GameTap, albeit with a different focus: No PC games, no arcade titles, just selections from every Nintendo home console... and every vanished major competitor, like the Turbografx 16 and Sega Genesis.

Ten years after his death, Gunpei Yokoi has been reduced to legend: condensed, marginalized and re-packaged as a Nintendo creation myth instead of a man. You'd think there'd be entire encyclopedias profiling this Japanese Doc Brown, the prolific inventor who engineered the D-Pad, Game and Watch, R.O.B., Game Boy, Virtual Boy, a dozen or so children's toys and the Super Mario Land, Fire Emblem, Kid Icarus and Metroid franchises. Not so. Instead, most official Nintendo histories gloss over Yokoi's contributions, and many books and websites - if they're even translated into English - echo the same rudimentary, unsubstantiated stories. Even Yokoi's own obituaries wander off topic. The man was so vague and ghostly, he may not have even existed at all.

This project somehow has the distinction of being both the longest and fastest portable electronics project I have ever done. I originally started making a C64 laptop in the fall of 2006, and kept pecking away at it every so often. Finally, a few weeks ago, I said "screw it" and started over.

Introduced at the beginning of the 1980s, the Mattel Intellivision was very popular in the early part of that decade. While never surpassing the Atari 2600 in terms of popularity, Mattel's console attracted quite a loyal following that holds the Intellivision in high regard to this very day. It is also the one console to receive the most continued support from its original developers. Today, Intellivision Productions owns the rights to the original games and continues to support the Intellivision community with emulators and "new" releases.

Considering the sheer number of arcade games that have come and gone in the past 25 years, narrowing it down to our ten favorites is a monumental undertaking to say the least! But we're all a sucker for top ten lists, aren't we? And because of the success of the console top ten section, we felt like a section devoted to arcade favorites was only natural.
