Top 10 Video Games of the 80s - By Cheap Canuck - 0 views

  •
Although the majority of today's gamers would laugh up their sleeves in derision if shown a classic video game from the 80s, the fact remains that this was really the decade that started the video game phenomenon, and the games that were the pioneers of this phenomenon, though graphically far inferior to today's offerings, were some of the most brilliantly craft, addictive games ever to grace a monitor or TV screen. Arcades ruled the day, with youth willing to do any odd job to earn a few quarters so they could run down to the local arcade and plug those quarters into games like Pac-Man, Defender, and Galaga. Most adults turned up their noses at these dark, musty caves with their overwhelming cacophony of beeps and blasts, but to kids these arcades were heaven on earth.

The AGS blog: The top 10 best AGS games series ever! - 0 views

  •
Well, there's lots of top 10 lists out there and I thought I'd try and compile my own, but I narrowed down my list of AGS games to about 60... so it was going to be hard work to throw out 50 of those. So, to make things easier, and also to be able to sneak loads more actual games in, I'm going to list the top 10 AGS games serieses ever. I'm not including series that only ever had one game made, because there are loads of them and non-adventures don't count, either. I'm also excluding remake series, but I'll give them an honourable mention (along with some others, so its not even a top 10, really!)

The Best Gameboy Advance Games For Today… Even If You Own A DS - 0 views

  •
It's pretty easy to find a list of "The Top 10 Gameboy Advance Games" or some similar ranking, but most of them were written back when the handheld was cutting edge and almost all of them only compare the games against other GBA games. This is all fine if the GBA is the only portable you own and ever plan to own. However, I know most people have moved on to the DS and the PSP. Since the DS library hasn't been completely fleshed out, I thought it would be a good idea to develop a list of games that are still relevant in today's portable market because of their unique gameplay that has not been improved upon on other handhelds.

Nintendo 64 101: A Beginner's Guide - RetroGaming with Racketboy - 0 views

Nintendo took their sweet time in bringing a console to match the Saturn, Playstation and the other 3D "powerhouses" that were popping up in the console market.    And of course, back in the later half of the 1990's many of us made fun of Nintendo as they stuck with the cartridge format instead of joining in on the CD-ROM bandwagon and the multimedia revolution that came with it.  However, for all it's limitations, it is interesting to see some of the things that were capable on the N64 and its aging format.   There are also a number of great games that only Nintendo and Rareware could provide that you just won't find anywhere else.

Sony PlayStation (PS1) 101: A Beginners Guide - RetroGaming with Racketboy - 0 views

  •
Originally designed to be a peripheral for the Super Nintendo, Sony's PlayStation brand would go on a steady climb through the late 1990s to dominate the market for two generations of games. But before it could get there, it would have to go toe to toe with the giants of the 16-bit era, Nintendo and Sega. The PlayStation, sometimes referred to as the PS, PS1, or even PSX, would also see an influx of gamers coming into the field while an older generation began looking for more mature titles. The little gray console would see one of the longest production runs in gaming history, running for over 11 years. Production would finally be halted on March 23, 2006.

Sega CD 101: A Beginner's Guide - RetroGaming with Racketboy - 0 views

  •
After Sega established a strong lead in the console market in the early 1990's, the company saw the possibilities that the new CD-ROM format could bring to gaming.  Sega produced the Sega CD add-on for the Genesis to bring the technology to the many Genesis owners around the world without requiring them to invest in a completely new system.  Unfortunately, they did not completely follow through with their vision.  Even though it was not a commercial success, that does not mean that a Sega CD isn't worth picking up for a reasonable price to expand on one's classic Sega collection.  The Sega CD is still an interesting piece of hardware and has some games that are still worth checking out.

I have been recently been fascinated by the history of the various machines that have battled for our living rooms. Each machine has had its strengths and weaknesses, and as a programmer, I'm amazed by some of the ways developers have harnessed the power of consoles and pushed them to their limits resulting is some marvelous games.

I started the Cheapest Games series quite a while ago and I figured I should revise some of the posts to reflect some of the changing values and give more relevant recommendations.   Hopefully, this revised list of PS1 games will help you start or build up your collection without having to spend much - I've even included some affordable "hidden gems" at the bottom if you need to round out your collection on the cheap.
