These Classic Games Deserve Your Attention

I have been playing video games on my personal computer for at least twelve years, and in that time I have probably played hundreds of titles. Some games were fascinating at first, but quickly lost their appeal. Others, however, can stand the test of time, and are clearly true classics in the genre that I still have fun playing, many years after they were first published. As such, I write this article as my homage to retro-gaming - the ten best old PC games I have ever played.

Sure, there are tons of Japanese RPGs out there. Chances are if you're a fan of the genre, you can easily name off many great RPGs like Final Fantasy, Persona, Kingdom Hearts, and Disgaea. But what about the great RPGs out there which fell through the cracks? Typically victims of dying systems, these games were well received by the few who actually play the games.

The First Decade in the 2Ks Saw Great Releases that Changed the Game

I remember my first video game experience - camped out in front of my best friend's Nintendo playing Megaman 3 while he played. It was something that absolutely dazzled my mind, and several years later for Christmas, my parents bought my brother and me a Nintendo 64 - complete with Mario 64. The experience of a long-time gamer was just getting started, and as the years passed by I collected a plethora of games that were kept on my shelf as my 'favorites'. They range through age, system, and even rating. However, if you're a girl looking for a game, or you know a girl who may be looking for a game, I have compiled my favorite games from mostly the Adventure and Role Playing Game (RPG) Genre.

Other lists I've created involving movies, music and sports have certainly sparked some healthy debate and I've had to laugh at the abuse heaped upon my choices in the comments section of those posts. However, I suspect this list of the best video games of all time will trump them all when it comes to reader backlash. Everyone has their own strongly held opinions when it comes to these types of lists, and if a favorite song, movie or athlete is overlooked then outrage naturally seems to follow. However, with video games there is an extra ingredient thrown into the recipe that really adds some spice to the argument. That ingredient is "The Fanboy".

There are certain games that can be widely considered the greatest ever. Unbeknownst to many "gamers" today, there were first person shooters before Halo: Combat Evolved. Sega is a multinational video game software and hardware development company founded in 1940 as Standard games. Sega's biggest marketing push for video games between 1989 and 2001 was to launch an anti-Nintendo campaign to carry the new generation of games with a slogan of "We do what Nintendon't". In 1991 Sega changed their slogan to "Welcome to the next level" and the console war continued. As a result of these campaigns some very popular games became available for players to entertain themselves with. These are ten of the most popular ones that Sega Genesis was involved with.

Although the majority of today's gamers would laugh up their sleeves in derision if shown a classic video game from the 80s, the fact remains that this was really the decade that started the video game phenomenon, and the games that were the pioneers of this phenomenon, though graphically far inferior to today's offerings, were some of the most brilliantly craft, addictive games ever to grace a monitor or TV screen. Arcades ruled the day, with youth willing to do any odd job to earn a few quarters so they could run down to the local arcade and plug those quarters into games like Pac-Man, Defender, and Galaga. Most adults turned up their noses at these dark, musty caves with their overwhelming cacophony of beeps and blasts, but to kids these arcades were heaven on earth.

For several years I loved my Nintendo Entertainment System. It was like my best friend, but sometimes you drift apart and meet new friends. In 1989, I met my new friend, the Sega Genesis. There were many fun games on the Sega Genesis and I always considered myself a Genesis fans, as opposed to those Nintendo fanboys. It's time to take a little trip down memory lane and remember my ten favorite Sega Genesis games.
