In the world of action-RPGs, Falcom's Ys series is the sad underdog. Despite the fact that the Japanese practically have a annual holiday for it, Ys has remained unfortunately obscure outside of its homeland. Maybe this due to the burden of being saddled with a slightly unpronounceable name (hint: it sounds like "ease"), and its full title - Ancient Ys Vanished Omens - is a grammatical quandary of tremendous proportions. Or maybe it's because they never really appeared on mainsteam systems in America - the original games were released on the Master System and Turbografx-16 CD, hardly places for them to truly show gamers what they're all about - fast paced action and adventure in faraway lands, damsels in distress, and some of the best music in the history of all video gaming.

It's pretty easy to find a list of "The Top 10 Dreamcast Games" or some similar ranking, but most of them were written back when the console was still on the retail scene and almost all of them only compare the games against other Dreamcast games. This is all fine if the Dreamcast is the only console you own and ever plan to own. However, I know for a fact that most Dreamcast owners now are hardcore retro fans that happen to own a few different consoles - both old and new. There may also be a few gamers out there wondering if they should bother adding a Dreamcast to their collection. Because of this, I thought it would be a good idea to develop a list of games that are still relevant in today's gaming market because of their unique gameplay that has not been improved upon on other consoles.

There have been many amazing game titles of many different varieties, so it'd be near impossible to really get a perfect list of top video games of all time. This, however, is my attempt. These are what I consider my top ten video games of all time, keeping in mind two things. First, I tried to include only one game for each series. I could easily make a top ten list that was half Legend of Zelda games, but what's the point of that? Second, there are popular games and series of games that I've just never gotten into, like Final Fantasy, Metal Gear, or Halo, so they won't be included.

However, I know most people have moved on to the DS and the PSP. Since the DS library hasn't been completely fleshed out, I thought it would be a good idea to develop a list of games that are still relevant in today's portable market because of their unique gameplay that has not been improved upon on other handhelds.

  Remember the '80's? Odds are if you're a gamer just hearing that makes you think of the good old Nintendo Entertainment System. The big N's first console to ship to North America, the N.E.S. was one of, if not the, most important game console of all time. It single handedly rejuvenated the video game market after the crash of 1983. It also was the birth console of some of the biggest names in gaming today. Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Contra, Mega Man, Final Fantasy, they all started on Nintendo's gray box.

I've always been a huge Nintendo fan. It's very difficult for me to choose which Nintendo system was the best, but I can assure you that the Nintendo 64 had some of the GREATEST Nintendo games of all time. Here's a list of my favorite games on that legendary system, while growing up...

From countless years of video game experience, I have come to enjoy a few excellent RPGs more than many other games available. These are ten of the top RPGs of all time.

Considering the sheer number of arcade games that have come and gone in the past 25 years, narrowing it down to our ten favorites is a monumental undertaking to say the least! But we're all a sucker for top ten lists, aren't we? And because of the success of the console top ten section, we felt like a section devoted to arcade favorites was only natural. In the early days of video games beat 'em ups were very popular. From the beat 'em up genre came another sub-genre called hack and slash games. Hack and slash games are similar to beat 'em ups in that the game is mainly just a bunch of button mashing as you fight a myriad of enemies at once. The difference between a hack and slash game and a beat 'em up is that typically beat 'em up games require using your fists and feet and hack and slash requires using a sword or knife for most of the game. The best sci-fi games have always been ones that pushed the boundaries of gaming and introduced players to something completely original. Just having spaceships or aliens is not enough - there are mountains of sci-fi games filling the bargain bins that can attest to that. Following are the top 5 sci-fi video games that have endured through sales, reputation, sequels, and imitations since their creation. Some have been universally praised (Myst), some have incited controversy (Mass Effect), but all are considered must-haves for the serious gamer.

It's great how video games have progressed over the past twenty years but every once in a while its nice to sit back and relax with an old school beat 'em up video game. Beat 'em up video games are games where the player controls a character that basically runs around beating up everybody on screen. The game is mostly made up of punches and kicks (and occasionally a weapon) but no complicated moves to execute like in fighting games. These are the ten best beat 'em video games of all-time.

I love RPGs, also known as role-playing games. No, I'm not talking about those games where you put on a makeshift wizard hat and are over-excited over the fact that your tin figurine just defeated Blorgon the Great. No, what I'm talking about are the videogames where you can explore a world to almost no end, where the storyline keeps you guessing at every turn (not always the case, sadly. I mean, how many times do we have to find the seven crystals, or fight and kill the last of an ancient race, etc.?), where your enemy kindly waits while you power up your Rain of Ultimate and Total Annihilation final move, the one where you summon thousands of swords from the sky to fall on one opponent, while lifting a boulder from the ground with your bare hands and throwing it on top of him, then to finish it up, call down the moon from the heavens to fall on his exact spot...which then only ends up doing 450 damage HP (about 1/20 of his damage meter) because your opponent was in a defensive stance during all of that. THOSE are the RPGs that I'm talking about.
