Jeff Utecht's blog entry about a novel way to teach students search skills. Give students and start and end point. Eg. 3rd Grade - give students: Rocks and Volcanoes. Start with Rocks and create a search story that gets them to end the search story with how Rocks and Volcanoes are related.

Google's created a series of lessons to help you guide your students to use search meaningfully in their schoolwork and beyond. Search Literacy lessons are broken down based on level of expertise in search: Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced.

A good way to share this type of information with students is via infographics. Complete a search for [infographic google search] and you will find a gold mine of information.

Some excellent tricks for a range of search engines/tools

Trove is a discovery experience focused on Australia and Australians. It supplements what search engines provide. If you are researching in the fields of the social sciences, literature, local or family history, or need inspiration for your school assignment, then this is the tool for you. It is the most amazing FREE site and I use it to find so many things "Australian".

Loved that showing this to my students meant I could show them that their small town of Kyabram is mentioned in National Library sources.

A great site for those of you who are interested in what your local member of Parliament is up to. Could be useful if you are pushing an issue on behalf of your organisation, sector or the public good. Searches Hansard to find out what your representative is doing or search on a topic; this site makes Hansard accessible in a way that actually searching Hansard does not!

Lists the best search engines for a particular research need

This is a fully searchable database of all the 780 First Fleet convicts via a number of search options. Searching can be done by name, ship or by crime. The data can be downloaded free of charge provided it is for non-commercial use. This is a great way to introduce students to real data based on real people. There are many opportunities to introduce children to the language of the day through information written in the database based on the occupations listed for some of the convicts.

Fantastic short course which will introduce you to some of the advanced search techniques available using Google.
