Jeff Utecht's blog entry about a novel way to teach students search skills. Give students and start and end point. Eg. 3rd Grade - give students: Rocks and Volcanoes. Start with Rocks and create a search story that gets them to end the search story with how Rocks and Volcanoes are related.

The Conversation is an independent source of information, analysis and commentary from the university and research sector. The articles are well balanced, edgy and very well written.

ABC Splash is a new education website for Australia, packed with 100s of videos, audio clips and games. Totally free to watch and play at home and in school.

This is a place where you can find information for books, add book details - ratings, comments etc, organise and sort book collections, share information with others and more. I find it very useful and I am sure it would be for any library user.

Gooru is a new service (still carrying the Alpha label) that aims to provide teachers and students with an extensive collection of videos, interactive displays, documents, diagrams, and quizzes for learning about topics in math and science.

A great Search Engine site, but with more features such as a Library of resource organised by subject area. Unfortunately very U.S. based, but for some subjects that wouldn't matter.

The first time I shared this I did so by sharing with PLN group rather than resaerch toolkit.. To share again I needed to go to edit, tick share to group, choose research toolkit from drop down menu and then go to save.

I like Zotero which is a free online bibliographical management tool.  haven't used it through Chrome yet but have used it in Firefox and got the add on for Word. It automatically cited information for you which was a real time saver for me when completing my Advanced Diploma studies. Read the article in Bright Ideas for more information. 

I too have use Zotero for my uni studies and found it quite clever. Zotero works better when installed using Firefox (which I personally don't use). So, if you are looking for a program to keep your bibliography on track take a look at this program.

The research guides at the State Library (Vic) are great and cover many subjects but I have found this guide particularly useful with secondary students. It focuses on Australian soldiers who served in WWI. Topics: soldiers, battles, medals, personal stories and more.

This is a really handy website which I use both personally and professionally. I am really keen on the idea of using fiction to help teach history. I think reading historical fiction helps bring history 'alive' and stimulates an interest in finding out more. Even if the book is not 100% correct it doesn't matter as discovering this is part of the learning process and encourages critical thinking.
