TeachPaperless: What to Do When Students Abuse Social Technology - 0 views

  • The parents need to understand that social technology is not going away. And they need to understand that it is in their own best interest that their kids understand both how to use it and how to be responsible digital citizens.
  •
Sometimes people worry that social media increases our ability to bully one another. In this website, the author seems to advocate responsible use and the teaching of proper social accountability as a remedy for this possibility, rather than an attempt to keep students away from online blogging and similar things.

Where does English fit in as a course in terms of lower-order and higher-order thinking?
  •
In part two of the English final examination, students will be required to outline, summarize, and/or evaluate an essay. The discussion on this linked web page is the sort of essay that will be provided on the day of the exam for students to respond to. While this particular item is much longer than the essays that will be provided, students can still attempt to outline and summarize portions as practice for the final exam.

TeachPaperless: Fountain of Youth: Reflections on Teaching Uses of Social Tech to Young... - 1 views

  • Because we need our teachers to understand that it's not about 'using tech', but rather is about fully engaging in the reality of the 21st century. And we need them to understand that -- if anything -- social tech is a fountain of youth when it comes to learning and ideas.
    • J.Randolph Radney

The claim implied here is that the new Web 2.0 technology like social media, social bookmarking, blogs, and the like are not going to go away. Rather, they are going to become the paradigm for social interaction at a distance. How may the development of such technology and its use in classes encourage greater interest among students in what is taught? How can such technology make it easier for students to complete coursework?

Although the clarity of description of the two scenes is unsettling in the extreme, the author, Boyden, has something he wants to say: What do you think it is?
  •
I am not too sure what the author wants to say but i think it might be something about one person coming into the world and the way another leaves the world. --i would really like to know you thoughts radney.
  •
My thoughts as I read the story involved shock at the violence and stark reality of unwilling death and also shock at the details of the beginning of life (read: more information than I wanted). I felt uncomfortable (though not in the same way for the two parts of the story), and I became somewhat curious as to how a storyteller could influence my feelings so much.

Native American History - 0 views

  • Native Americans suffered a collective tragedy over the course of the nineteenth century. But their stories cannot be simply condensed into one master narrative of defeat and decimation. To understand what happened to "The American Indian," we need to look at the lives of the many Indians––and whites––that contributed to this multi-faceted story.
    • J.Randolph Radney

A major question concerns who will be allowed voices to tell these stories.
  • In 1783, the United States was a new nation of about 3 million people living, for the most part, along the Atlantic seaboard. Native Americans, perhaps numbering around 600,000, controlled most lands west of the Appalachian Mountains. By 1890, a bit more than a century later, the United States stretched from coast to coast and was home to some 66 million people. Only 250,000 Indians remained, most of them living on reservations holding just a fraction of the land they once controlled.
    • J.Randolph Radney

Not only is this true, but the United States of 1783 needed the help of its indigenous people, whereas, by 1890 it tried to believe it did not.
  •
I would like to receive two kinds of commentary on this set of web sites. First of all, could those of you with connection to First Nations communities comment in regard to the value of these pages? Secondly, could any of you comment in regard to differences you believe could be documented regarding how indigenous peoples were treated in Canada compared to what is documented here concerning the United States?

Internet of Things Can Make Us Human Again - 1 views

  •
This article seems to be predicated upon the notion that humans are only humans from the neck up, and that any sort of manual labour that can be done by a machine should be done automatically and without human supervision and management. What do you think about this sort of description of humanity?
  •
If that were true there would be a lot of people without jobs. Many jobs may be able to be taken over by computers but the human supervision will still be present. A computer may not see a problem before hand where as a human can think ahead and react to the problem before it occurs.

What Did They Tweet? Oct. Wk 2 | Teacher Reboot Camp - 1 views

  • Can we change students’ behaviors by making learning fun? Ed Webb shared this video and started a great discussion on his website about the pedagogy of fun. I would like to continue the discussion here, because I do think that the educational system is programmed to make learning tedious. Exploration, discovery, problem-solving, and collaboration should be fun, but often this part of learning is lacking in curricula. I believe it is the best part of learning, which is why I hope this video inspires you and maybe your staff!

The secret link between refinishing furniture and academic research - ProfHacker.com - 1 views

  • I have long been fascinated by the myth that there are two different types of people in the university: The creative faculty who produce works of art, on the one hand, and the scholarly faculty who write peer-reviewed journal articles, on the other hand.
  •
What do you think? Is there a divide between people who are creative and people who are analytical/scholarly? Must we choose one or the other?

Smile - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - 1 views

  • Although many different types of smiles have been identified and studied, researchers have devoted particular attention to an anatomical distinction first recognized by French physician Guillaume Duchenne. While conducting research on the physiology of facial expressions in the mid-nineteenth century, Duchenne identified two distinct types of smiles. A Duchenne smile involves contraction of both the zygomatic major muscle (which raises the corners of the mouth) and the orbicularis oculi muscle (which raises the cheeks and forms crow's feet around the eyes). A non-Duchenne smile involves only the zygomatic major muscle.[5] Many researchers believe that Duchenne smiles indicate genuine spontaneous emotions since most people cannot voluntarily contract the outer portion of the orbicularis oculi muscle.
