Is it Okay to Cheat in Football? - Project Syndicate - 15 views

  •
This is a must read on ethics.
  •
It is definitely not ok to cheat in football. The main reason why players cheat is because they want to win. It is the strong desire to win that make them do whatever they can in order to win. That includes cheating. I do agree with the article, Neuer should have gone up to the referee and tell him that the ball had passed the line. Even if the referee does not allow the goal, at least he had the courage to stand up and tell the referee that England has scored. The same goes for Thiery Henry. I feel that what Robbie Fowler did was extremely courageous. Despite Liverpool and Arsenal being rivals, Fowler had the integrity to approach the referee. People might hate him for not scoring, but some will respect him. Anyway, these people who had cheated in football has been 'punished' indirectly. So whatever thing you do, it will come back to you.

  •
Interesting argument: If we force the minimum wage, companies are forced to be more productive instead of simply bringing in more foreign labour.
  •
But then again there's the question on whether or not increasing productivity will lead to longer working hours have a corresponding effect on society at large.

VIDEO: Lighthouse evangelism pastor Rony Tan's comments on Buddhism : THE TEMASEK REVIEW - 14 views

  •
I knew it was only a matter fo time before this happened. With the internet, people can now find out what people say behind closed dooors about their religion. Comments can be exaggerated or misinterpreted. The Internet is so powerful, yet so dangerous and double-edged.

It was like a laughing session amongst the church members. There was no form of respect towards Buddhism. Totally unacceptable. If we have such low tolerance and respect towards each and other fellow Singaporean's religion, how are we able achieve a peaceful multi-racial society?
  •
I seriously had a hard time finishing the video. Lots of mixed feelings and I'm really furious about them making fun of other religion in session like this. You believe in Jesus Christ so be it, I respect your choice, decision and belief. But why make fun of the practices and rituals of other religion?
  •
Yes I agree the laughter is so insensitive and insulting. I reckon in religious issues people will disagree about beliefs, but we should be respectful.
  •
I watched part of the video from somewhere else, and inside me, got defensive - well, who wouldn't be, if their religion is being put down? They do not have the full understanding of the religion but dared to criticise. It just goes to show that they are utterly ignorant.

Exclusion orders demand up - 18 views

  •
Interesting that more Singaporeans can see how this is going to be a major social problem.
  • ...5 more comments...
  •
Exclusion orders are like individual ban orders. It may promote illegal gambling and drive gambling addictions underground as the addicts seek to relieve themselves at illegal gambling dens. Instead of issuing exclusion orders to bar addicts from entering the casinos, a better solution would be to identify these addicts at the casinos and give them mandatory counselling help. My name is reversed.
  •
In time to come , we will see whether the police force is able to meet the demands of having casinos in the region.
  •
Singaporeans can see that the casinos are going to be a big social problem due to the effective promoting and education by the NCPG. The government would not be too worried about the rise in demand for exclusion orders as Singaporeans are only a small portion of their target group. They are looking to the rich business men and big shots from other countries, especially our neighbouring countries, to make the casinos a success. I wonder how many muslims asked for the exclusion order out of the 264.
  •
The exclusion can only ban from entering casinos in Singapore. It will definitely lead to a rise in illegal gathering, or even an outflow of Singaporeans to other countries and gamble. Such exclusions maybe done unwillingly, thus leading to the possibility of the negative outcomes.
  •
I agree that this will lead to a rise in illegal gamble. However, i believe that if they have the will to make self-exclusion applications, they will stop gambling.
  •
I feel that this is a pleasant sign to see people wanting to be excluded from entering the casino. In this way, gambling-related problems such as family abuse can be minimised. Families will be able to live in harmony. However, this may bring about another issue which some have already mentioned. That is the rise in illegal gambling. Some gamblers may not have the means to enter the casino or may not want to spend the $100 unnecessarily on entrance fee. They need not pay to play at any other "local" gambling dens.
  •
Problem of gambling always occur with casinos. Exclusion just prevent people from gambling legally however they might be illegal gambling occuring still. Loansharks are also present with the setting up of casinos this causes borrowing and causing social problem. The police should be on their guard more

TODAYonline | Singapore | Reason pastor not arrested - 17 views

  •
Double-standards or exercising good judgement? You decide.
  • ...2 more comments...
  •
well the reason y i tink the pastor was not arrested because he was already interrogated by ISD, hence it is as bad as being arrested already. Same as the 2 boys who put racist comments on facebook who were nt prosecuted.
  •
It's all good if there's is consistency. The problem is they've arrested and jailed others for similar offences. Two men were jailed for racist comments about Malays. One youth was names and rehabilitated for racist comments about Malays. So why the differing approach now? In the practice of law, precedents matter. Now here's the real fear I have. If a non-Chinese makes racist comments about Chinese and is arrested, we will then have a huge problem on our hands. I hope the powers that be are objective people. If they get it wrong, the consequences could be dire.
  •
Quite unfair that the pastor is not jailed
  •
well its rather true, however, i personally think that is like Chinese criticise Chinese, but the only difference is religion. Thats y the approach is different this time.. In the past, is likeone race makes fun of the other. Hence ISD takes action to interrogate him first. Since the pastor was nt jailed, so the 2 guys who posted racial comments against Indians must nt be jailed or else it will be seen unfair.

IVF baby mix-up - 16 views

  •
Oh my God. Lawsuit time. Useful evidence. What happens when things go wrong with tech. So what happens to the poor baby?
  • ...6 more comments...
  •
I think is human error that causes the sperm mixed up and not the fault of technology.
  •
if technology is advanced enough, there won't be human error cos techno is supposed to get things into place isn't it? i think that this is a good wake up call for us. It reminds us not to be over reliant on technology cos even such things can be messed up. I guess there is not much of a choice left but treat the child like their own? The baby is innocent.Since the parents decided to have an IVF baby, they should know that there are bound to be risks involved even though i don't understand how could the lab ever make such a mistake. I thought that they would have have the obligation to be very careful with the process since it involves a life but i guess it is human nature to err? :-/ Poor baby~
  •
It is not exactly the fault of technology as what Jing Yaw mentioned, there can be other factors that has caused this. According to Dr Cheng Li Chang, the son of the Owner of Thomson Medical Centre, he mentioned that there is only one IVF would be done a day. It could be the possibility that there was a mix up and labeling error. However, we must not entirely point fingers at the hospital. There is a minor possibility that the women might have slept around with other man and then accuse the hospital.
  •
I think no matter how advanced technology can be, there will be some human actions involved just like people controlling robots' buttons to manufacture cars. I think joel think too far
  •
I agree with Jing yaw. It's how we manipulate technology to our advantages and so this is probably human error. Erm, why would a woman still sleep around if she is desperate enough to go for IVF? It is fairly obvious that she wants a baby of her husband and herself. It is not an easy process. It can be both emotionally and physically draining and it is not cheap either. Hence, i think it is most likely that the lab technician made an blunder somewhere.
  •
As what I mentioned earlier on, it is a minor possibility i.e. something far fetched but still can happen.
  •
but you did not manage to convince me why is there a minor possibility that it may happen. it's not like we don't understand what is a minor possibility haha.
  •
hahaha, Well a couple of factors man, however I primarily feel that there was a mix and a labelling mistake. It can also be a sabotage, thats second.xD

"contrary to the values of the Republic." from second paragraph. what is the values of the Republic? and why gt close and open inverted comas?
  •
Sarkozy believes that the reason behind the banning of the burkas is because the covering of a woman's face is seen as a sign of subservience and a way to deny them freedom and equality. But doesnt the banning of burkas be interpreted as imposing a dress code and denying them the choice to wear what they want? On the other hand, i can understand where France is coming from. With the growing rate of terrorism these days, banning the burkas could be seen as a step to defend its country from extremists. This is because if Burkas were allowed, people could commit crimes or even hide explosives if the help of a Burka. Futhermore, there is nothing in the Quran that directs women to cover their faces. Thus, France's view on banning burkas can be largely justified.

Whats in a name? - 11 views

  • It is difficult to say Christians cannot say 'Allah' when Arab Christians have been doing so for thousands of years and when Christ, who spoke Aramaic, would probably have said Alah, Elah or Alaha. Both Matthew 27:46 and Mark 15:34 tell us that at the ninth hour on the cross, Christ cried out Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani, 'My God, My God, why hast thou forsaken me?' - Eloi or E'li being the personal possessive of Elah, and which probably should have been spelt Elah-i or Alah-i. Still, it would be as meaningless to say Christians have a better claim on the distant common root of Elohim, Elah or Allah, because Christ came before the Prophet, as it would be to say Jews or Muslims do.
  •
Briiliant. In this debate, we've neglected the fact that Aramaic, the language Jesus spoke is very close to Arabic. So when Christ spoke he would have refered to God using a word that sounds a lot like Allah. The people making such incindiary comments in Malaysia should read this. Ignoramuses.
  •
Before Muslim rose into power from 300AD, Christians were using Allah as something to call God in Arab, so Malaysia is just...
