  • As more books and journals become easily accessible online, it’s easy to wonder if brick-and-mortar libraries could go the way of the video store. But research at the university has shown that the more people look to digital resources, the more they consult physical materials as well, according to Judith Nadler, director of the University of Chicago Library.

3M announces Cloud Library e-book lending service for '21st century' libraries - 2 views

    This is basically a platform agnostic ebook model...libraries buy the content and users can place them on whatever device they want. It's in beta and they have 100,000 titles so far. Seems like the way to go to me!

University of Iowa - Civil War Diaries Crowdsourcing Transcription Project - 2 views

    This reminded me of Cole Camplese's comments on the instant crowdsourcing of video recording the sessions at the 2011 TLT Symposium, Clay Shirky's example of that socially-written mathematics (?) paper, and a bit of Chris Long's posts on using digital tools in research.

    The socially-written paper was about "P vs NP", which is a computer science/mathematics problem. A fairly simple explanation is here: http://www.claymath.org/millennium/P_vs_NP/ But yeah - crowdsourcing stuff like this is great when you have a community of people who really care about it. It's like having an army of amateur archeologists.

  • The learning commons, sometimes called an “information commons,” has evolved from a combination library and computer lab into a full-service learning, research, and project space. As a place where students can meet, talk, study, and use “borrowed” equipment, the learning commons brings together the functions of libraries, labs, lounges, and seminar areas in a single community gathering place. The cost of a learning commons can be an obstacle, but for institutions that invest in a sophisticated learning commons, the new and expanded partnerships across disciplines facilitate and promote greater levels of collaboration. The commons invites students to devise their own approaches to their work and to transfer what they learn in one course to the work they do for another.

    This is a critical discussion today and will be more important going forward. If TLT wants to create a vision related to creating the best learning spaces in higher education we need to better understand what is and isn't working.  My emerging goal is to establish a strategic direction that has us look at our spaces on a continuum from very informal to very formal in a consistent and systematic way.

    The writing process around this particular 7 Things paper was a lot of fun. I got a real sense that what we're doing with the Media Commons spaces, especially plans for the Knowledge Commons and Ritenour are in line with the kinds of spaces being developed at other universities. There was a lot of discussion around the political side of these spaces since the physical space, staffing, and resources don't fall into a neat hierarchy of organizational structure. Anyway, I'd really enjoy being part of a discussion about space design. There are a set of recommendations that the informal learning spaces group generated two years ago that haven't been acted upon.     thanks for this. we're using mendeley for a working group right now. it took a little while to get used to, but definitely has potential for sharing resources. will have to check out the highlighting and annotation tools.

2 Universities Under the Legal Gun - Technology - The Chronicle of Higher Education - 1 views

  • What they're fighting about: The educational video publishers claim that UCLA is violating copyright and breaching its contract by copying DVD's of Shakespeare plays acquired from Ambrose and streaming them online for faculty and students to use in courses. They say UCLA had the right only to lend copies to teachers for in-class use or to show the DVD's in the library itself.
  • The university did not "secure the right to stream our programs from a library server to any class and any student whenever it chooses," said Allen Dohra, president of the trade group, in a written statement. UCLA says copyright law permits streaming.
  • Much is also at stake for publishers, who say UCLA's practice could be catastrophic for the educational-video business. They fear it will cut off new markets for distributors like Ambrose, which sells its own streaming service.

  • Kevin Smith, the university's scholarly-communications officer, described the plaintiffs' request to limit how much material can be used as "a nightmare scenario for higher education."
  • Publishers Weekly described the case as "the most significant copyright trial for publishers since the Kinko's course-pack litigation," referring to a 1991 case in which Basic Books sued the Kinko's chain for copyright infringement. (The publisher won.)

    Very nice! Emily, does Zotero now work with resources behind PSU authentication? I tried to use it a couple years ago with little luck. I typically use Google Scholar, then hit the "Get it from Penn State" link(s). Once I landed on a resource, Zotero had trouble saving it.

    This was a great radio documentary that aired this Sunday on WPSU. Did anyone else catch it? Really great info about how professors are changing the ways they teach, moving away from lectures to techniques like peer instruction even in large classes. I was also excited to hear it mention the classroom idea we are implementing in the Knowledge Commons in the library. A classroom where there is no "front" as another way to change up traditional teaching.

  • Colleges themselves are also finding a need to craft multiple identities online, setting up a different Facebook page and Twitter account for every department or research lab. The University of Virginia's library has 14 Facebook accounts.
  • Watch Out for Zombies The job of updating a Facebook page or Twitter account for a university department is often assigned to a student worker. When the academic year ends and that student has graduated or moved on to another job, though, those pages may stand lifeless, creating a kind of zombie online presence. "If it's not active, it's detrimental," says Erin Dougherty, who recently became Endicott College's first digital-marketing coordinator. "It just sort of turns people off if you're a visitor to go to something that hasn't been updated in a long time." Ms. Dougherty is hunting for zombie accounts on the campus and either recommending they be spiked or finding a permanent point person or group to make sure each one has a pulse.

    Nothing earth shattering, but I do find the "zombie" section extremely accurate. Getting people to keep the social spaces alive with content seems to be a big issue (at least with SITE, likely with others as well).
