    Question - I couldn't find an answer to this and thought you could help. Has anyone run calculations to see if black holes could form within a black hole?

    Hi Terry. I think that if you refer to the notes on singularities this is partly answered. Niel recommended Lee Smolin's book -- "The Life of the Cosmos", and he discussed at least one idea from that book related to your question. I think the best answer is that it appears plausible that this could happen if black holes behave inside their horizons as described in Smolin's book. Ultimately though, we are prevented from seeing anything inside the horizon, so we have no way to tell!
