"The Fog Horn by Ray Bradbury Lesson Plan Curriculum goal: Students will increase their vocabulary and reading skills. Lesson objective: Students will be able to tell some details about the author, use the new vocabulary words, and analyze the story. Materials: copies of the story Length: 2 class periods (50 minutes each) Ray Bradbury (b. 1920) is one of the most famous American novelists and short story writers. He mostly writes in the science fiction and fantasy genre. Vocabulary: tremble (v.) - to shake (usually because of fear) shiver (v.) - to shake (usually because of cold) daft (adj.) - crazy apparatus (n.) - equipment anguish (n.) - feeling disturbed about something shudder (v.) - to shake for a brief moment (usually because of fear) isolation (n.) - being alone brood (v.) - to think for some time twitch (v.) - to make a sudden movement fumble (v.) - to do something in a clumsy way Have the students take turns reading the story. Discussion: Story elements: What kind of narrator does the story have? What is the setting? Who are the main characters? What is the central conflict and how is it resolved? What is the main theme of the story? Do you think it's possible that some ancient, unknown creatures might still live deep in the sea? What do you do when you feel lonely?
