National Standards for Foreign Language Education | American Council on The Teaching of Foreign Languages - 0 views

  •
"With the help of a three-year grant from the US Department of Education and the National Endowment for the Humanities, an eleven-member task force, representing a variety of languages, levels of instruction, program models, and geographic regions, undertook the task of defining content standards - what students should know and be able to do - in foreign language education. The final document, Standards for Foreign Language Learning: Preparing for the 21st Century, first published in 1996, represents an unprecedented consensus among educators, business leaders, government, and the community on the definition and role of foreign language instruction in American education. This visionary document has been used by teachers, administrators, and curriculum developers at both state and local levels to begin to improve foreign language education in our nation's schools. The 3rd Edition Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the 21st Century, revised including Arabic standards, is now available."

Resources for Project-Based Learning - 3 views

"Last month we released Projects for all our education wikis. Our intention was to give you a better tool for group work, but, as many of you have pointed out, they're also great for project-based learning. Project-based learning, or PBL, grew out of early 20th century education reform, like the works of John Dewey. It generally involves directed, open-ended questions, real-life problem solving, and presentation to an authentic audience. And, of course, it's a great way for students to build collaboration and 21st-century skills while mastering content. We're really looking forward to hearing how you use PBL and the Projects feature in your classrooms. We're so excited, in fact, that we rounded up a few resources from around the web to help you out:"

Dubai Tailor - Noor Makkah Tailors - 0 views

The Dubai Tailor is the official name for the shalwar kameez. It consists of a loose blouse that often reaches the knees and loose pants with a lower collar that is heavily embroidere and has a cord to tie it around the waist. These gowns have a long and romantic history, and the Afghans and Pushtoons adopt them as their primary attire before they became so widely worn today. Dubai Tailor History The Pushtoons wore loose robes throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. Dubai Tailor resemble the garments used by modern Arabs. The Pushtoons and the Sikhs start fighting around 1805, and confrontations were commonplace at the time. The Sikh army completely capture the Northwest Frontier from the Pushtoons and Afghans, who were soundly crushed. As a result, the Sikh army capture Multan, Peshawar, Jamrud, and Khyber. Hari Singh Nalwa, the commander who commands the Sikh army, terrorizes the Afghan people. Because Afghans were terrifi of Hari Singh, mothers would frequently tell their children to go to bed or Nalwa would arrive. The Afghans were alarm by the Sikhs' repeat victories because they dread captivity at the hands of the Sikhs, and Nalwa in particular. Despite his reputation for brutality, Nalwa never murders or harm women or the elderly by Sikh principles. The Pushtoons finally realized that Sikh ladies wore the Shalwar kameez at that point. This still serves as the norm for Sikh women's attire today. The Pathan believed that dressing in Shalwar kameez, a Punjabi outfit, would help him flee the Sikhs and Nalwa's clutches and avoid the wrath of the latter. Thus, by donning the Shalwar kameez, Pathans might break free from the Sikhs' control. Over the years, the Pathan people adopted the outfit, and it is now also known as the "Pakistani Pathani Suits in Dubai ." The Suits in Dubai is the official name for the shalwar kameez. It consists of a loose blouse that often reaches the knees and loose pants with a lower collar. That is heavily embroidere

"A New Hero's Journey in the Classroom Kids need to know the basics of story creation -- character, conflicts, resolutions etc. -- before they can write their own. Have them read, watch, and play video games with a critical eye towards identifying these basic story elements. Then you can use life timelines as way of uncovering their personal narratives. Have them identify heroes of their own from real life or fiction as inspiration. You can go as deep as you have time for here! There are myriad tools available for actual story creation (see Resources below). "

Not Just Group Work -- Productive Group Work! | Edutopia - 0 views

"caffolding Culture How are you building a culture of collaboration in your classroom? Teachers should not forget the importance of scaffolding the skills needed for students to work in groups. Paired with a good collaboration rubric, where students know what is expected of them in terms of behavior, teachers need to scaffold skills such consensus building, effective communication, and the ability to critique. Educators need to explicitly teach and assess collaboration, a critical 21st century skill, if they want their group work to be productive."

Project Based Learning - Explained: A Custom Video Project with BIE - Common Craft - Our Product is Explanation - 7 views

      •
When people ask about the inspiration for our style of videos, I often say that our videos reflect the way that I wish I had learned in school. My learning style wasn't a good match for the way I was taught. Recently we completed a custom video project with the Buck Institute for Education (BIE) that focuses on a Project Based Learning or "PBL", and boy did it open my eyes. I can now see that I needed teachers who put PBL to work. I needed to get up from my desk and engage. I needed to work on a real-world issue and use creativity and problem solving - what are known as 21st century skills these days. This video is an introduction to PBL and how it impacted a science teacher's students and helped their community.

Pop Cosmopolitanism » Introducing the After School MMO Group - 0 views

      • This bridge, we believe, will enhance their success in life and academics, as these literacies are essential components found in the 21st Century Learning Skills (see Partnership for 21st Century Learning Skills for more information), which many schools are still trying to conceptualize, let alone implement. Although we are very early in the pilot program, our first goal has been to develop the MMO group into a “third place” for these boys to hang out and play together. As the group has begun developing cohesion, and the boys are becoming better oriented with the game, we’ve begun integrating content into our sessions that are not only valued “gamer” practices, but promote literacy practices as well (such as writing forum posts, for example).
