Understanding Projects in Project-based Learning: A Student's Perspective - 0 views

    Project-based learning offers promise as an instructional method that affords authentic learning tasks grounded in the personal interests of learners. While previous research has presented results of learning gains, motivations and teacher experiences, still limited empirical research has presented the student perspective in project-based learning. This research sought to explore how learners created projects. Using a case study design and five purposively selected participants from eighth grade geography, five themes emerged: (1) internal influences, (2) external influences, (3) beliefs about projects, (4) tools for technology-rich environments, and (5) learning outcomes and products. The first four themes describe influences to shape the fifth theme, learning products. The term learning products was used to describe both the learning garnered by the participants and the learning artifacts the participants produced as part of the instructional unit. Implications for practice and future research are considered.

    Gifted Education Professional Development Package Using the Package All modules in the Package contain a pre-test for teachers to determine what they might already know. Both the Core Modules and the Extension and Specialisation modules contain practical components with case studies and tasks for teachers to demonstrate that they have understood the module before moving on to the next one. The modules contain an overview of current research about particular areas of gifted education. Dubit Research, a youth marketing agency, runs a standing panel of 600 7-12 year olds in the UK, and has asked them a series of questions relating to which virtual worlds they use and how they feel about advertising in virtual worlds. The results show that 73% of British 7-12 year olds are using some sort of virtual world. Club Penguin leads the pack with 43%, Habbo following with 27%. There is remarkably little fragmentation in the market: only 8% use a virtual world other than the top 10. What surprised me most about the statistics is how even the gender split is on many virtual worlds - entirely even on Club Penguin, and similar on most other games, although Runescape is, as one would expect, far more popular with boys.

Positive expectations influence performance positively, and negative expectations influence performance negatively. In educational circles, this has been termed the Pygmalion Effect, or more colloquially, a self-fulfilling prophecy. What has always intrigued me about this study is specifically what the teachers did to communicate that they believed a certain set of students had "unusual potential for academic growth." The research isn't overly explicit about this, but it indicates that the teachers "may have paid closer attention to the students, and treated them differently in times of difficulty."     Social network sites, online games, video-sharing sites, and gadgets such as iPods and mobile phones are now fixtures of youth culture. They have so permeated young lives that it is hard to believe that less than a decade ago these technologies barely existed. Today's youth may be coming of age and struggling for autonomy and identity as did their predecessors, but they are doing so amid new worlds for communication, friendship, play, and self-expression. We include here the findings of three years of research on kids' informal learning with digital media. The two page summary incorporates a short, accessible version of our findings. The White Paper is a 30-page document prepared for the MacArthur Foundation's Digital Media and Learning Series. The book is an online version of our forthcoming book with MIT Press and incorporates the insights from 800 youth and young adults and over 5000 hours of online observations.
