Politicians and talking heads, of both the mainstream liberal and conservative persuasions, commonly refer to this as "our free market system," or maybe "free enterprise." But Americans haven't had anything even remotely resembling a free market for over 150 years.  (For that matter we didn't have one before, what with Enclosures, the Combination Law, mercantilism, slavery and colonialism.)  Since the mid-19th century, what we've had is massive collusion between big government and big business. 

Astonished? Then you have not been attentive. It is been a week of Nokia-related conjecture, mainly happening from a seep out note in which CEO of Nokia Mr. Stephen Elop, who previously effort at Microsoft, contrasted the current predicament of company to a "ablaze platform".

Last month, the world was shocked as the Tunisian autocrat Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali, who had ruled his country for 23 years, was overthrown in a protest movement that lasted only 29 days. The event was soon dubbed the "Jasmine Revolution," a symbolic reference to a blooming flower. While many doubted that this revolution would spread, it was only days later that massive protests rocked Cairo, resulting in the resignation of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, who had been in power for more than 30 years. While the fate of both countries is still unresolved, one thing is clear: the people are demanding democracy, and they have forced massive changes in their government to get it.

What are they thinking? November 2010 didn't count? That we really don't care if we bankrupt everything? That it's all ok to keep adding to what we know is a problem and have them poo poo us like it isn't really there? Do you feel the patronizing pat on the head? Does it make you angry? Special note: You see who is proposing this - 2 just reelected and one who feels safe in his state.

Rand Paul is backing the National Right To Work Act that will work to propagate the ability for people to choose whether or not to support unions. This is an act that is important to have a national discussion on due to the changing nature of the world and the labor market, how costs are driving jobs overseas and closing our factories. Right now, according to a number of studies, we are losing about $100 billion every year because corporate America and the very wealthy are stashing their money in tax havens like the Cayman Islands and Bermuda. We should be aware that in 2009, ExxonMobil made $19 billion in profits and not only did the company not pay anything in taxes, it got a $106 million refund from the IRS. We should also be aware that since 1997, we have almost tripled funding for the military. So if we are serious about reducing the deficit, those are things we need to look at-not at Social Security, not programs everyday Americans need.

Peak Oil is the point at which petroleum production reaches its greatest rate just before going into perpetual decline. In "Peak Oil and a Changing Climate," a new video series from The Nation and On The Earth productions, radio host Thom Hartmann explains that the world will reach peak oil within the next year if it hasn't already. As a nation, the United States reached peak oil in 1974, after which it became a net oil importer. Bill McKibben, Noam Chomsky, Nicole Foss, Richard Heinberg and the other scientists, researchers and writers interviewed throughout "Peak Oil and a Changing Climate" describe the diminishing returns our world can expect as it deals with the consequences of peak oil even as it continues to pretend it doesn't exist. These experts predict substantially increased transportation costs, decreased industrial production, unemployment, hunger and social chaos as the supplies of the  fuels on which we rely dwindle and eventually disappear. Chomsky urges us to anticipate the official response to peak oil based on how corporations, news organizations and other institutions have responded to global warming: obfuscation, spin and denial. James Howard Kunstler says that we cannot survive peak oil unless we "come up with a consensus about reality that is consistent with the way things really are."
