Bloggers are Africa's new rebels - Chicago Tribune - 0 views

  • Dagem, as he chose to be called, was a new type of African revolutionary: a blogger.
  • The U.S. should take note. As it prepares to engage with Africa more intensely than at any time since the Cold War, in part by the Pentagon’s establishment of a new Africa Command headquarters to coordinate military and security interests, the U.S. will be competing on an increasingly flat information playing field.
  • Gone are the days when Washington could control its messages in client states. The scruffy cyber cafes of Chad and the man in Congo who rents his cell phone by the minute – sometimes climbing atop a tree to improve reception – ensure that Washington’s voice will have to vie with those of the resource-hungry Chinese, or with the designs of Al Qaeda recruiters.

This older article highlights the immorality of much that is called U.S. foreign policy and journalism. The lesson learned here is not what it should be, that people on the grassroots are fighting against authoritarian violent governments funded by the U.S. Rather it is a bland, neoimperialist comment about what the U.S. propaganda machine has to deal with in future interventions.

Innovation in history: Getting better all the time | The Economist - 0 views

  • Many years of field experience in the Americas and Asia have shown GM crops to be safe, but, Mr Ridley rightly complains, the Luddites of the green and organic movements continue to obstruct progress.

    • John StGeorge

This is an admission against interest that there will be disruption and damage to morale and readioness.
  • The report noted that even during a Jan. 28 briefing on plans moving forward on the change, one military expert said, "I think if something unforeseen arises, it's important to understand that each of the service chiefs – we'll do an assessment every two weeks.
    • John StGeorge

Reassessment every two weeks indicates an anticipation of many "unforeseen" issues arising from the get go.

Bowen 'breached rules on impartiality' - April 16, 2009 - The Independent - 0 views

  • The BBC said it had no intention of taking any disciplinary action against Bowen. Nonetheless, the findings were made by the BBC Trust's editorial standards committee – which includes such figures as Richard Tait, the former editor-in-chief of ITN, and David Liddiment, the former director of television at ITV – and will cause great concern within the BBC newsroom.
  • "It was not necessary for equal space to be given to the other arguments, but ... the existence of alternative theses should have been more clearly signposted."

London G20 Police outnumbered and attacked « POLICE INSPECTOR BLOG - 0 views

  • Inappropriate use of force brings with it trouble for the officer who transgresses, as it always did except for the fact that such things were rarely captured on cctv or mini videos - but if they ever show the footage of the anti-Vietnam war Grosvenor Square riot in 1968 you’ll see some stick happy police officer who, ultimately, got the sack
  • Hardly something that should result in the local bobby from an English village being pilloried along with every other officer in the land.
  • I’m-a-citizen-not-a-criminal says that those police who “just stood and watched their colleagues break the law are equally to blame”. The same goes for protesters.

  • A whack with the baton on a fleshy part of the body (as taught) ie thigh, calf, upper arm will hurt and sting and maybe bruise. it is a means of control and saying ‘Im in charge’. If the police didnt have these actions in their armoury, what do you think would happen?
